Norcross, Ga., September 30-Ad Brooks living three miles from Norcross, was shot Tuesday night by his son-in-law, Alex Donaldson, and died from the effects of the wounds Wednesday night. Brooks was a drinking man and came home from Atlanta Tuesday night drunk. Donaldson met him at the gate, Brooks suggested they would have a "round or two," and placed his hand on his hip pocket, as if to get his pistol, Donaldson shot at him six times, three balls taking effect. The coroner is holding an inquest today. Donaldson has not been arrested as yet. The Atlanta Constitution 18 Mar 1898 p 12 Donaldson Was Acquitted. He Was Charged with Having Murdered His Father-in-Law. Messrs. Albert & Hughes, who have been in Lawrenceville for the past few days engaged in defending Alex Donaldson, who was on trial for murder, returned to Atlanta yesterday. The jury in the Donaldson case returned a verdict yesterday morning acquitting him of the crime of murder. The case was one that excited considerable interest on account of the peculiar circumstances surrounding the crime. Donaldson, some time during October, 1897, shot and killed his father-in- law, old man Brooks. The state had evidence to the effect that the killing was cold-blooded murder, but evidence was produced by the defendant to show that he had killed Brooks in self-defense. There was considerable feeling in the community over the affair. The jury was out only three-quarters of an hour and brought in a verdict of not guilty.
