He died as a result of wounds incurred at the Battle of Bentonville, North Carolina. James enlisted 5/12 /1861. He was assigned to 42nd regiment, Company B Independent Rebels, Gwinnett County, GA. Captured in Vicksburg on 7/4/1863 and paroled 7/6/1863. He was wounded at Bentonville, North Carolina on 3/19/1865 and sent to General Hospital #10 Salisbury, North Carolina where he died from a wound to the right breast on 4/19/1865(-taken from the Confederate Muster Roll, Gwinnett Co., GA.) Up until May, 1996, James has rested in an unmarked grave at the old Luthern Cemetary in Salisbury but in May 1996, a marker was finally put on his resting place by the Daughters of the Confederacy. He was the husband of Elizabeth F. (Knight) Freeman who was the daughter of Isaiah and Ruth Knight of Gwinnett County. James is the son of John and Mimmy (Jones) Freeman of Gwinnett County. The Freemans lost 4 of their 8 sons to the Civil War.
