Habersham-Banks-Lumpkin County GaArchives Military Records.....Greenman, I (Israel/Isaiah) L(Lockwood) January 5, 1899 Civilwar - Pension 1st Regiment of SC Volunteers, Lucas Bat's Brigade ************************************************ Copyright. Lockwood Greemon. Searching thru Georgias Virtual Vault, I found his Pension Application for 1898 & 1899 from Banks County. Afterwards, he was given $30/yr. Each application showed Power of Attorney given to T.F. Hill which lead me to believe there was a literacy issue for him. His disability: Loss of Eye which came from a wound above the left eyebrow by fire of shell which resulted in total loss of said left eye. These records also say the TF Hill knew him since Feb 26, 1840, and the 1880 cesus state he was born in 1840 & shows his 1st name as Israel. Pension request shows he joined military service Jul 13, 1863 making him 23 yrs of age. The 1880 census records he & both parents were born in GA & his wife (Catherine J) & both her parents were born in SC which leads me to believe he met her during his military service with the SC regiment. Census also shows their first child (Liza A.E.)was born in 1866. Another record (note card from GVV) says "Greenman, Israel (?D)" (1851,Nov3): Orphan of Silas Greenman; R.B. Lewis, guardian; sec. W.M. Varnum, Lumpkin County. The same note cards hold another record for Silas Greenman: Capt., Hall Co., Oct.23,1833-Apr.17,1837. (M.R.(abbr=Military Record, 1829-1841, p58) His fathers 1st notation was 3yrs b4 I.L.'s birth & the other notation of M.R. ended the yr after his birth. I've not yet found any record of the mother of: I."LOCKWOOD"(the name his family uses per his living grandson: Elbert GREEMON). I.L.'s wife is buried in the New Hope Cemetery in Cornellia, Ga and her headstone states: C.J. GREEMON 7/16/1840-7/7/1919. All the direct descendents of Lockwood use the surname"GREEMON." Additional Comments: I.L.'s grandson, Elbert Bradford Greemon (b9/7/1914)(95)is still living, extremely competent, and I'm going to see if he remembers conversations concerning his grandfather's name being "Greenman" instead of "Greemon." Also, I plan to get photos to upload in the near future.
