Airy were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 7, in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home with Ron Cope and Martin Davis officiating. Burial was in Yonah Memorial Gardens with full military honors provided by Rabun County Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 15. Mr. Evans died Thursday, July 4, 2002, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following an extended illness. Born in Habersham County on June 9, 1930, he was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the Korean Conflict. He was retired from Mt. Vernon Mills and was a member of Cornelia Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Olivia Stamey; son, Claude Evans Jr.; brothers, Bill Evans, Clifford Evans; and sister, Evelyn Evans. Survivors include his wife, Eleanor Fitzgerald Evans of Mt. Airy; sons, Alan Stamey of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Richard Wallace of Marietta, S.C.; sisters, Maggie Evans, Betty Lathan, both of Mt. Airy, Rose Lawrence of Anderson, S.C., Janie Lomax of Atlanta; and four grandchildren. McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home, Cornelia, was in charge of arrangements.
