The Rev. J. Clarence Reynolds and the Rev. Ronnie Thurmond will officiate, with burial in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Cemetery with military honors provided by the Rabun County Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 15 and Habersham County American Legion Post 84. Mr. Stewart died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center following a brief illness. Born in Greene County on Sept. 28, 1925, he was the son of the late Arlin B. and Catherine Laura Vinson Stewart. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II, where he was disabled. He was a recipient of three Purple Hearts. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 7720, and Rabun County DAV Chapter No. 15. Mr. Stewart was a former councilman and mayor of Alto for many years. He was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Norman Stewart, Marvin Stewart, Harvey Stewart; and son-in-law, Renee Willis. Survivors include his wife, Betty Pierce Stewart of Alto; daughter, Elizabeth Willis of Rome; daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Marshall Chosewood of Alto, Patsy and Jesse “Rip” Keef of Alto; brothers, J.B. Stewart of Fort Wayne, Ind., J.C. Stewart of Covington, Joe Stewart of Madison; sister, Mary S. Howell of Madison; and grandchildren, Kristie and Paul Smart, Mistie Chosewood, Wendy Willis, Kimberly Willis, Dan Keef, Matt Keef and Paul Stewart Willis. McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home, Cornelia, is in charge of arrangements.
