Frank Irvin, of Cornelia, was a Cornelia, GA victim to perish in the Winecoff Hotel fire in Atlanta on Dec. 7, 1946. Harold was discharged from the Navy about a month ago. When entering service, he received his training at Barin Field, Pensacola, FL, and served with a Torpedo Bomber squadron, and a Utility squadron in the Pacific for six to eight months. Funeral services were held on Monday, Dec. 9, 1946, at 4 o’clock from Level Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Curtis Carpenter officiating. Pallbearers were: Walter Benton, Martin Ellard, Tommy Irvin, Paul Reeves, Dwayne Dowdy and Arthur Payne. Surviving besides his parents, are a sister, Mrs. Edgar Martin of Burlington, NC, and a brother, Robert Irvin of Cornelia. Interment was in the churchyard with Ritchie & Company in charge. Additional Comments: He stayed at the Winecoff Hotel in Atlanta on December 7, 1946 and perished in the fire that is known as the worst hotel fire in U.S. history. He was about to start a job as an Eastern Airline pilot.
