A native of Dundee, scotland, he visited the United States in 1885, returning to Dundee for a year or so. He made some two or three visits to this section and in 1889 located in White County, where he engaged in gold mining. He was one of the most successful pioneers in the industry and gradually expanded his holdings until he was the owner of approximately 50,000 acres of ore and timber lands in White County. In 1904 Mr. Martin moved to Clarkesville, and in the same year he married Miss Lulu Conley, of Gainesville. His residence here terminated in 1912, when he moved to Atlanta, but during his stay in Clarkesville, he was ever active toward the upbuilding of the community. He erected a two story building which is now occupied by Habersham Bank and Clarkesville Drug Co., and was the moving spirit in securing the lands and a $25,000 donation from the county for establishing of the Ninth District A and M School. At one time, he was owner of the Tri-County Advertiser newspaper. Moving to Atlanta in 1912, Mr. Martin was identified with the Georgia Power Company until the time of his death. Surviving him are two sons, John Martin, Jr. and A. C. Martin, both of Atlanta; a sister, Miss Annie R. Martin of Canoustie, Scotland. Mrs. Martin died in 1922.
