Southerland [deceased July 12, 2010] Funeral services for George Perry Southerland, 75, of Powder Springs, formerly of Demorest, were held at 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 14, at Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest, with the Rev. Tom Mewborn and Don Reed officiating. Burial followed in Yonah Memorial Gardens. Mr. Southerland died Saturday, Nov. 12, 2005, following an extended illness. Mr. Southerland was born on April 5, 1930, in Habersham County. He was the son of the late Perry James and May Taylor Southerland. He was a graduate of Demorest High School and attended North Georgia Technical College. Mr. Southerland was a longtime member of Demorest Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He was also a member of Clarkesville Masonic Lodge No. 325 F&AM and was a Scottish Rite Mason and a Shriner. Mr. Southerland was a member of the Chattahoochee Mountain Fair Board for five years. He was inspections coordinator for DeKalb County for 29 years. Survivors include his wife, Doris Vinson Southerland of Powder Springs; daughter and son-in-law, Rita and Ralph W. Connell of Marietta; sisters, Gladys Hallford of Clarkesville, Evelyn Howard of Cornelia; brother, J.C. Southerland of Cleveland; grandchildren, Calen, Lorna and Cheryl Connell. Memorials may be made to Demorest Baptist Church or to Health Field Hospice of Marietta. Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest, was in charge of arrangements.
