Guy Lee officiating. Burial was in Habersham Cemetery, with Lamar Whiting officiating at graveside. Mrs. Whelchel died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at her residence following an extended illness. Born in Habersham County on June 10, 1941, she was the daughter of Ruth Chambers Fortenberry and the late Gladys Fortenberry. She was the owner and operator of Floral Designs by Scarlett for 10 years. She was memorial chairperson for the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life, and a member of Habersham Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Adam Christopher Elrod; brother, Hobert Fortenberry; and sister-in-law, Patsy Ash Fortenberry. Survivors include her husband, Sam Whelchel of Demorest; daughter, Jennifer King of Demorest; son and daughter-in-law, Jamison and Christine Whelchel of Sharpsburg; mother, Ruth Chambers Fortenberry of Demorest; brother and sister-in-law, Marvin and Elese Fortenberry of Demorest; sister-in-law, Barbara Craven Fortenberry of Demorest; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Billy Ray and Genie Whelchel of Gainesville; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Shirley and Jim Gailey of Clermont; and grandchildren, John and Andrew King, Kevin Watson, Jamison Lamar Whelchel II and Dylan Whelchel.
