The Rev. Billy Burrell officiated with burial in Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery, with full military honors by the Rabun County Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 15 and Habersham County American Legion Post No. 84. Mr. Broome died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at a local nursing home following an extended illness. Born in Banks County on Nov. 12, 1911, he was the son of the late Skid and Fannie Simmons Broome. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Simmons Broome; son, Melvin Broome; and daughter, Peggy Jean Broome. Mr. Broome was a lifetime member of the Grant Reeves Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 7720. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. Mr. Broome was a retired farmer and the last of his immediate family. Survivors include his daughter, Bernice Ensurd of Bowling Green, Ky.; sons, Leroy Broome of Baldwin, Clois Broome of Baldwin; 10 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin was in charge of arrangements.
