He married Rutha Trotter before 1822 in Pendleton Dist., SC. After John died in 1847, Rutha appeared with their children on the 1850 census of Habersham Co. She last appeared on the 1860 census of Habersham County and is believed to have died about 1865. There are only three tombstones with inscriptions in this cemetery. There is a double tombstone for Eliza A. (daughter of John and Rutha Harkins) and her husband William R. Moore. There is also a tombstone with very faint inscription for Ruth Moore, daughter of Eliza A. and William R. Moore and it states that she was the wife of William H. Banks. Directions to Cemetery: From Clarkesville, GA, take Hwy 115/17 NW out of town and take Hwy 17 north as it splits off from Hwy 115. Turn off of Hwy 17 to the right on Sam Bell Road. The cemetery is located on the Essex farm at 1545 Sam Bell Road. It is within sight of the road on a tree covered knoll surrounded by manicured fields. Stop at the owner's home and he will graciously give his permission for you to go across his land to reach the cemetery.
