Road, which is the road to Hopewell Methodist Church, across from front of house in front yard of the Alvin Smith property. This homeplace was once known as that belonging to Claude Hulsey. The burial plot contains headstones for five graves with the following inscriptions: REV. JOHN GARNER born Dec. 23, 1812, died May 3, 1886; MATILDA GARNER born Aug. 1, 1812, died May 13, 1882; JOSEPH A. GARNER born July 9, 1846, died Dec. 21, 1891; LOUISE S. GARNER born Aug. 11, 1848, died May 26, 1887; JOSEPH URBAN GARNER born Dec. 15, 1882, died May 9, 1883. The conference minutes of April 29, 1886, Yellow Creek Baptist Church, has the ordination record of John Garner to the ministry: "Yellow Creek Church convened with the Duberry Church in the ordination of JOHN GARNER. The Presbytery consisted of John E Rives, J. L. Chapman, J. Underwood. They proseded (sic) in ordaining the said Garner to the full work of the ministry." The 1880 census of Pickins District, S.C., enumerates the following: John Garner, over 45 years of age. One male in the household under age 10, one female between ages 16 and 26, one female over age 45 years, and three slaves. Henry Garner, one male in household age 16 and under 26 years and one male age 26 and under 45 years; one female age 16 and under 26 years. Sturdy, Thomas, and James Garner were resident of Pendleton District, S.C., 1770. Henry Garner purchased land on Golden Creek of Twelve-Mile Creek April 4, 1796, and later purchased land on Eighteen-Mile Creek. This Henry Garner died in 1848, leaving a widow and several children. John and Henry Garner of Pickens District, S.C. lived in the neighborhood of a number of families later found in and around Hall County: David Martin, Enoch Smith, Bassel (Basil) Smith, Boyds, Pattersons, Robinsons and others. Some early history of the Garner family is recorded in the history of Gwinnett County, Ga. John Gardner, son of John and Mary, was born Jan. 4, 1684. It was about this generation that the name was changed, or rather shortened to Garner, maily due to the pronunciation of the name which sounded more like Garner than Gardner. This John married Magdaline _______? To them a son, Benjamine, was born. Benjamine Garner, son of John and Magdaline, was born 1706. He married Martha Williams. Their children were John, Thomas, Sarah, Christopher, and Melichor. Benjamin Garner moved to South Carolina some time before his marriage and died there April 30, 1740. Thomas Garner, son of Benjamin and Martha, married Elizabeth Chapman July 9, 1752. Their children were, Sarah, William, Anne, and John. Thomas died about 1778. John Garner, son of Thomas, was born 1763. He married Anne Keen June 27, 1786. Their children were: William, Andrew, and James August Garner. James Garner, son of John, moved to Gwinnett County, about 1825 and was married to Mary Brice in 1818. Their children were: William born 1819, and married Elizabeth Puckett; James, born 1820, married Margaret Lanier; Emelia, 1882, married a Mr. Austin. Mary, 1824, married Mr. Cain; John, 1828, married Emily Hale; Andrew, 1831, married Perlina Ann Pounds; Thomas, 1833, married, Elizabeth Jones; Sarah, 1836, married a Mr. Gadis; Betty, 1839 married Joseph A. Hannah; James Garner died Oct. 15, 1869 and Mary Brice Garner died July 21, 1879. The names John, THomas and William have come down through almost every generation. The 1820 census of Hall County enumerates a William Garner whopossibly was a brother to the James Garner in Gwinnett County and father to the Rev. John Garner, buried in the family plot near Murrayville. Additional Comments: There are new tombstones and a nice fence placed around the Garner plot by Jeff Davis. There is also an oil painting of the Garner homeplace donated to the Murrayville Library by Jeff Davis who is the great-great grandson of Rev. John Garner.
