NASHVILLE, Feb. 14. --- A Chattanooga special says: Aaron Prater, a dangerous desperado and moonshiner from Georgia, was arrested here. Prater is wanted for the murder of two United States marshals. About six weeks ago a party of revenue agents raided several illicit distilleries near Gainesville, Ga. The moonshiners were prepared for the attack and a fierce battle ensued. The moonshiners were well fortified, and fought with desperation. During the pitched battle two revenue officiers were killed and others wounded. The officer who arrested Prater states that there is conclusive evidence that he committed the murders. Additional Comments: Aaron PRATER died of measles on March 5, 1885 while incarcerated in the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, Georgia. He was there awaiting trial on charges that he was the leader in a plot to murder revenue officers. Aaron was the son of Josiah and Mary Jane (SHOOPMAN) PRATER. Please note also, that the above article is inaccurate. The two men killed during the raid were moonshiners, James Anderson GRANT and Josiah PRATER (brother to Aaron). No revenue officers were killed.
