Whelchel Name Abundant in Area Politics and Battles The Gainesville Times, June 29, 1980 - Sybil McRay, Hall County Genealogist Descendants of Francis Whelchel Sr. cane to Hall County, in the 1820's from South Carolina, and some of these descendants have served in numerous public offices. In fact, an entire page contains the Whelchel services in a publication "State and Federal Officers, 1777-1936; County Officers, 1777-1800, with Sheriffs and Justices of the Peace through 1815; and Military Officers 1777-1860" which has bee deposited in the Georgia State Archives, Atlanta. The 1820 census of Hall County does not enumerate members of the Whelchel family since they were still living in South Carolina at that time. Six Whelchel heads of families were enumerated in the 1830 census and they were all relatives. These Whelchels were: Davis, Francis, Francis Sr., John, John (2), Dr. John (3), Moses, and William. The Dr. John Whelchel was a son of Francis Whelchel and Ann Stockton. He was a veteran of the Revolutionary War and was buried at New Bridge Church Cemetery in Hall County. John was born in Albemarle County, Va., enlisted from Union District, S. C. for military service and fought in the battle of King's Mt. It is believed that the other Whelchels were born in South Carolina. Francis Whelchel III came to Hall County in 1823; his brother John came in about 1822; and Davis Whelchel came in 1824. Other relatives came along during these years or shortly thereafter. These Whelchels have numerous descendants throughout this area and members of the family have served in numerous public offices and contributed to the history of Hall County and surrounding counties.
