Wood descendants settled near Gainesville, Commerce The Times of Gainesville - Sybil McRay, Hall County Genealogist Note: This Wood line is one of the family lines of Sybil McRay, who has extensively researched this family line. Numerous descendants of Pennywell or Pennell Wood, originally from Culpepper, Va., and removed to Spartanburg, S.C., reside in this area today. Some of these live in Hall County; some settled around Commerce; and all can take pride in a Revolutionary War veteran ancestor. Pennywell or Pennell Wood came from Culpepper County, Va., to Granville County, N.C., and then to Spartanburg District, S.C., where he died and was buried. He is known to have had two sons: Henry and Benjamin. The Rev. Henry Wood was a preacher and is recognized even today for his preaching and Revolutionary services. He was born Dec. 1, 1756, in Bertie County, N.C. The reverend applied for Revolutionary service, going from his Spartanburg home to make his declaration in Greenville District in order to confer with his ole friend, Abraham Mayfield. The Wood and Mayfield families of Spartanburg and Greenville districts appear to be related. Henry was married in 1777 to Susan Elizabeth Mayfield. They were parents of the following children: Mahalali, Isham, John, Elizabeth Nash, Mary, Henry Jr., Daniel, Charity, James and Lottie. He organized and pastured a Methodist church near Greer, S.C. He died in 1845 and was buried at Wood's Methodist Chapel in Spartanburg County, S.C. John Wood, as son of The Rev. Henry and Susan E. Wood, was born Aug. 12, 1780. He was married to Margaret Jacobs, and the couple were parents of Bill, John Jr., Caleb, Joshua, Wiley, Henry, Anderson, Jim, Enoch, Isham, Molly and Betsy. Joshua and Caleb were twins and came to Georgia and settled in Jackson or Banks County. Joshua Wood was born April 9, 1804, in Spartanburg, S.C., and died in 1883 in Banks County, Ga. The location of his grave is either in Jackson or Banks County. He was married to Stacy Wheeler, who was born about 1815, probably in Jackson County, Ga. She was the daughter James Wheeler. She died in 1879 in Banks County and probably is buried alongside her husband. Joshua's twin, Caleb Wood, was born April 9, 1804, in Spartanburg County, S.C. and died Oct. 16, 1864, in Jackson County, Ga. He and several family members are buried in the Wood family cemetery which is near Commerce. Caleb was married to Elizabeth Wilson, who was born July 6, 1908, and died Feb. 29, 1876 in Jackson County. Several other children of John Wood - brothers and sisters of Joshua and Caleb - also came to Georgia and settled in other counties: Murray, Cherokee, Cass and Whitfield. Children of Joshua and Stacy Wheeler Wood, all born in Jackson County, were: Encoh N. Wood, born Nov. 30, 1831, died Nov. 17, 1904; James Oliver Wood, born June 28, 1833, died June 29, 1912; Mary Ann Wood, born Oct. 19, 1934, died Sept. 16, 1891; William F. Wood, born Nov. 9, 1835, died before 1850; Asberry H. Wood, born March 23, 1837, died May 12, 1962; Virginia Adeline Wood, born May 29, 1839, died April 14, 1914; Pirenea Wood, born Jan. 9, 1841, died Sept. 12, 1919; Louisa Wood, born May 5, 1843, died Dec. 21, 1911; Rosanna Wood, born Jan. 20, 1845, died Sept. 12, 1891; and Simeon M. Wood, born Nov. 11, 1852, died 1910. These children all left descendents who scattered to other Georgia counties and elsewhere.
