Wood information requested by reader The Times of Gainesville, January 31, 1980 - Sybil McRay, Hall County Genealogist Transcribed by William L. Stephenson, Jr. (WoodArt@one.net) Last October Gregory E. Jackson of Montgomery, AL, wrote the Gainesville Heritage Group which he addressed to Brenau College, and said he was researching his ancestral lineage. He had traced one ancestor, Wiley E. Wood, back to Hall County. He stated that Wiley E. Wood was enumerated in the 1830 census of Hall County and that Wiley later moved to Tallapoosa County, Alabama. I sent Mr. Gregory the information that recorded in Deeds and Mortgages, Hall County, dated April 17, 1848, were the names of legatees of Robert Wood and that Wiley E. Wood was one of these. The other legatees were John Deavours, Archer M. Wood, Joel T. Wood, William Conley, Samuel Brice, Lewis Ulmer, John J. Wood, and Robert C. Wood. John Deavours was attorney in fact for John J. Wood. Also, that Robert Wood was named as a son in the will of Samuel Wood which was probated in Hall County, July 10, 1821. Mr. Gregory sent the following information on the Wiley E. Wood family. The family moved to Tallapoosa County, Ala. In 1836. Wiley Wood was born about 1830 (probably 1803). Rachel, his wife, was born about 1807. Both Wiley and Rachel gave Georgia as their place of birth to the census taker. The couple married about 1825. Three children of the couple were born in Georgia: Nathan Wood, born 1831; Mary Wood, born 1823; and Martha Wood, born 1835. Six children were born in Alabama. They were Washington Wood, born 1837; Wiley Wood, born 1840; Matilda Wood, born 1841; William Wood, born 1842; Anderson Wood, born 1847; and Lewis Wood, born 1849. Anderson Wood, born May 13, 1847, died May 16, 1907, was the great-grandfather of Mr. Gregory. Anderson was married to Martha Ann Ward on Nov. 10, 1863, in Tallapoosa County, Ala. The family later moved to Notasulga, Macon County, Ala., and later to Nixburg, Coosa County. The Anderson Wood family next moved to Buyckville in Elmore County, Ala.
