Gainesville, Ga., October 30- The first young man from Gainesville to give his life in the cause of democracy and freedom is James T. Bales. His father, Andrew Bales, of this city, received official notification on Saturday of his death, caused from wounds received in action. He was 24 years old, and was reared here. He drafted into service on May 29, last, and left Camp Gordon for overseas service in July. His death, according to the official message, occurred on September 16, and it is not known in which battle he received his mortal wound. A letter to his father here, written by him on Sept. 18, stated that he was then in hearing of the big guns-eight days before his death. A peculiar coincidence in the case is that he told a number of friends here before he left for overseas service that he would be the first Gainesville boy to be killed in action-it seemed an obsession with him. Besides his father he is survived by one brother and five sisters.
