Ham, known as “Snollygoster Ham, died at his home at East Highlands last night at 12:35 o’clock, after, a four weeks’ illness. He was stricken with asthma and heart trouble in Chicago four weeks ago while in a lecture tour and had two severe attacks on the train while enroute home. It was necessary for him to cancel all engagements. After arriving at home he grew better and was up yesterday. He was sitting up when his heart stopped beating and he died. Col. Ham was an ex-member of the legislature and had edited many newspapers. He became famous as an orator and humorist during the early days of Populism in Georgia and became known throughout the country for his fine humor and unique expressions. After the campaign was over he was urged by many daily papers to reduce his speeches to a lecture. He took the lecture platform and made a magnificent success, being in demand throughout the nation. But among those who knew him at home he was loved and admired for his beautiful character, genial nature and many qualities.
