Scott, Noted Confederate Soldier, Is Dead. Gainesville, Ga., April 8- Cooper B. Smith, aged 65 years, was buried here this afternoon, having dropped dead from heart failure. He removed to Gainesville twenty-two years ago from Charleston, S. C. It is alleged by confederate veterans that Scott was the man who fired the first cannon at Ft. Sumter at the outbreak of the civil war. He was given a fitting burial by his late comrades in arms. Additional Comments: Cooper B. Smith is buried at Alta Vista Cemetery in Gainesville. His stone states he was a Cpl. Co. G 1st S. C. Infantry C. S. A. No dates.
