A Well Known Citizen of Gainesville Passes Away-Short Sketch of a Useful Life. Gainesville, Ga., November 8- Mr. William P. Smith, better known as "Uncle Billy", one of the oldest and most highly esteemed citizens of Gainesville, died yesterday morning at 9 o'clock, and was interred at Alta Vista cemetery this afternoon at 2 o'clock. He was a native of Pickens district, South Carolina, and at the time of his death was seventy-six years of age. He moved to Gainesville when twenty years of age, and where he has resided ever since. He was the first mayor of Gainesville, and served two terms. He also represented Hall county in the legislature two terms. He has been a consistent member of the Methodist church for many years, and a Mason of the highest standing for about thirty-five years. He has files a number of offices to his credit, and to the entire satisfaction of his constituents. He was one of nature's noblemen, and none knew him but to love. He had been confined to his room for five months past, and one of his cherished desires was that he might live to cast his vote for Grover Cleveland, but the angel of death touched his heart just on the evening of the great battle, and not he rests from his labors. No fitter epitaph can be engranved upon his tomb than: "Here lies an honest man."
