He was the son of Josiah Collins and Frances Loyd Lancaster Collins. At the age of 19, Samuel, followed in the footsteps of his oldest brother Joseph who was a member of the Baldwin Blues, enlisted in the Confederate Army. Samuel, along with an older brother Valentine, his Uncle Risdon and his brother- in-law Joseph Hudson, were mustered into Co. H of the 57th Ga. Infantry. This Company was known as the Independent Volunteers led by Captain John Richard Bonner, Lt. Archibald McKinley and Lt. William R. Stetson. The 57th was sent to Kentucky and fought in the Battle of Perryville on Oct. 8th, 1862. They remained in Kentucky until they were deployed to Vicksburg, Mississippi. On March 9th, 1863, Samuel’s brother-in-law Joseph Hudson died. Two months later in May 1863 at the Battle of Champion Hill in Baker’s Creek, Mississippi, his brother Valentine was killed and Samuel was wounded in the leg and captured. Samuel was paroled on July 8th, 1863 and exchanged on September 15th, 1863. Samuel was placed on detached service and later returned to the 57th where he continued to serve in Battles of Missionary Ridge, Tn, Whiteville, Tn., Whitemarsh Island near Savannah, and the Battles around Atlanta July20th to Sept.1st, 1864. On April 26th, 1865, Samuel along with the few remaining members of the 57th surrendered in Greensboro N.C. Upon returning home, Samuel married Elmira Antoinette "Nettie" Babb on February 8th, 1866. "Nettie" was the daughter of Brinkley Babb and Missouri Harris. Samuel and Nettie settled on a farm on McComb’s Mount Rd. now known as Lake Laurel Rd. Samuel and Nettie had six (6) children who lived in Baldwin and Hancock Counties. They are 1) Addie Lee Collins married to John Joseph Carr 2) Mary Annie Collins married to Levi Blizzard 3) William Robert Collins 4) Minnie Bell married to James B. Kennedy Sr. 5) Adelia Estelle Collins married Winton Napier. Arnold 6) Lillie Beatrice Collins married Albert Mervin Arnold Samuel was remembered by his granddaughter, Antoinette Arnold Thomas, as having a sawmill and lumber company. Samuel was remembered by one of his daughters at the time of his death as "being such a good father, his heart was warm, tender and kind; he was sympathetic at all times and ready to lend a helping hand". The only surviving grandchild today is Antionette Arnold Thomas. Raymond Arnold passed away last week.
