Harton is listed as a four-year-old child in the household of his mother Tabitha Harton. His father, Jesse Warren Harton, died sometime between 1845 and 1850. Jesse was the son of Lott Harton and Sarah Warren also of Hancock County. Lott was the son of Thomas Harton and Mary Wood, who were married in Warren Co., NC. Thomas was the son of Thomas Harton (d. 1795) and Mary Bell (d. 1799). Both the last two left wills in Warren Co., NC, now in the NC State Archives. Mary Bell was the daughter of Thomas Bell and Mary Thompson, who came from Surry Co., VA, to take up a Granville Grant in the 1750's as did Thomas Harton. The first record I have found on Thomas Harton was in 1749 as a "sworn chain carrier" in a survey. He also was reported as a sergeant in the Granville District militia that same year.
