Smith Top of this page states FRONT GATE GRAVES LOCATION An accompanying page is the INDENTURE made Hancock County this the eleventh day of August in the year of our Lord Eighteen hundred and sixty nine between Benjamine T. Harris and Augustin Verot, Roman Catholic Bishop of Savannah and his successors in office. It was for the purpose of locating a Catholic Church on the land hereinafter conveyed. On the land lying in said county on the south side of village of Sparta and on the East side of the road leading from said village to Milledgeville by way of Fairplay containing one & one fourth acre more or less with shape and boundaries marked by stones set up for the special purpose of defining the boundaries of the said lot. The cemetery/church property was overgrown with large trees (which have been cut down about a year ago (2000) and now is covered with brush. The land is very rough but some grave markings are visible. The location is two (2) blocks S. of Court House on the SE corner formed by Court Street and Hancock Street. It is next to the City oxidation pond. There are sunken places and few markers with information. This list came from The Catholic Diocese, Greensboro, Ga.
