Witnesseth that the said Washington Henry hath this day made and delivered to the said Solomon Barefield his certain promissory note, subscribed with his hand and bearing even date with these presents, whereby the said Washington Henry hath promised to pay the said Solomon Barefield or bearer four hundred and eighty five dollars and sixty four cents on or before the twenty fifth day of December next ensuing the date hereof for value received. Now for and in consideration of the sum of five dollars by the said Solomon Barefield to the said Washington Henry in hand paid the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged as well as for the better securing the payment of the aforesaid promissory note, the said Washington Henry hath granted, bargained, and sold, and doth by these presents grant bargain and sell unto the said Solomon Barefield his heirs and assigns one negro woman by the name of Anny, twenty seven years old, one negro boy by the name of Ben, five years old, one negro girl by the name of Juner[?], two years, one negro boy, the name of Hardy, eight days old. To Have and to Hold said bargained negroes to the said Solomon Barefield his heirs and assigns to his and their own proper use, benefit and behoof forever, and the said Washington Henry for himself his heirs executors & administrators the said bargained negroes unto the said Solomon Barefield will warrant and forever defend against the claim of himself and his heirs and against the claim of all other person whatever. Provided never the less, that if the said Washington Henry his heirs executors and administrators shall and do well and truly pay or cause to be paid unto the said Solomon Barefield his heirs and assigns the aforementioned sum of four hundred and eight five dollars and sixty four cents on the day and time mentioned and appointed for the payment thereof, in the said promissory note mentioned with lawful interest for the same according to the tenor of said note, then and from thence forth as well this present Indenture and the right to the fore [sic] negroes thereby conveyed as the said promissory note shall cease determine and be void, all intents and purposes.
