This file was contributed by: Troy Colquitt telles@elberton.net ==================================================================== 14th Regimental Court 0f Enquiry Militia Minutes 1804—1862 Hancock County, Georgia ( page 143 ) Attending a Regimental Muster held in Sparta on Friday the 10th day of November last—he not appearing was fined in the Sum of one dollar Ex’d Ex’d Eli Hart for the same default was also fined in the Sum of one dollar Ex’d A communication was received direct from Capt. James Sharp of the 110th district on the Subject of his default at the last Muster on the 10th of Nov. last – on which the court proposed the following resolution. Resolved That Capt. James Sharp is now entitled to the Command of the 107th district—but that he can not be compelled to do Military duty So long as he remains within the former boundary of the district for which his commission was granted—unless Said Commission be taken from him by legal authority. A communication was also received & read from Samuel & Eli Hart- Upon which the Court propose the following resolution. Resolved that it is out of the power of this Court to Grant the request of Said Samuel & Eli & that the Capt. of the 107th district in which they reside be directed to require them to do duty in his Company. Ex’d Edmund Randall Martin Martin was fined in the Sum of two dollars for not attending the last Regimental Muster at Sparta on the 10th of November last. Resolved That all Commissioned Officers ( page 144 ) belonging to the 14th Regt. Who were absent at the day appointed for the Court of Enquiry for the last Muster on the 10th of Nov. last & failed to make returns of defaulters in their Companies be notified to attend a Court of Enquiry to be held in this place on the third Thursday in January next to answer for their default. Pres’d Sparta 25 March 1827 This being the day appointed for the Court of Enquiry for the 14th Regt. G.M. The Court met pursuant thereto—Present----Lieut. Col. N. A. Adams & President of the Court---Capt. Levi W. Coxen, Capt. James O. B. Thomas—Capt. Lemuel Veasey Lieut. Joseph P. McCulloh—Abednego A. Wright & Ensign Ansel Sheffield. The oath of office was administered by Capt. Coxen to the Pres’d & and by him to the other Members of the Court. The court being duly organized proceeded to business. The Clerk W. C. Wilcox having resigned an election was held to fill the vacancy when on counting the balots –W. Hamilton P. Snead was declared duly elected. Henry W. Rhodes was unanimously elected Pro Vost Marshall for the ensuing year. ( page 145 ) C. Wilcox former Clk. Presented his bill for pass Services amounting to twenty six dollars & fifty Six Cents which was proposed by the Court & ordered to be paid out of the first money collected. Ordered That A. R. Hunter show cause at the next sitting of this Court why a fine assessed against him on the 21st November 1823 should not be collected by due course of law. Capt. James Hillsman returned as a defaulter at a Regimental Muster in Sparta on the 7 &8th of this instant --- was called & made his excuse which being deemed sufficient by the Court He was accordingly acquited. It having been proposed to hold a convention of the officers & non Commissioned officers attached to this Regt.or and the Camp ground near this place, it was resolved that the officers composing the Court would attend & use their captains to get them to attend at that place provided the other regiments agree to the Same at such time as may be agreed on--& that Col. Bryam be appointed to hold communication with the commanding officers of the other Regiments & upon this subject –that he be given notice to the officers provided this subject contemplated will be come into effect fifteen days previous to the time of muster. ( 163 ) It appearing to be Necessary the convention proceeded to change the Militia Districts, Wherefore The 101st & 104th districts were added to the 116th to be known & distinguished hereafter as the The 116th the 103rd was added to the 102nd to be known as the 102nd The 107th & the !09th were added to the 108th to be known as the 108th . The 114th added to the 112th to be known as the 112th. The balance to remain as they are now. It appearing that the 13th & 14 Regiments have been united the convention proceeded to divide the County unto Battalions Whincefore the 107th –106th , 108th 111th—Militia Districts were united to conform the Upper Battalion & the 113th—116th—117th--& 118th to conform the Lower Battalion.
