Not many years ago, by his intermarriage with Mrs. Nichols, of Nashville, he became known to many of our citizens. He was the grandson of Ethan Allen, of immortal memory. Additional Comments: Born, Vergennes, Vermont, 18 May 1798, his mother being a daughter of Ethan Allen. Graduate of West Point military academy [1817], he served in the Seminole and Mexican Wars, and in the War Between The States as Major-General of volunteers, being a close personal friend and advisor of President Lincoln. He was the author of many books on alchemy, a disciple of Emanuel Swedenborg, and is buried in the Post cemetery at West Point, New York.
