Hancock County, Ga. Will Book J, p. 24-28 In the name of God Amen, I, William Griggs of Hancock County being weak in body but of sound and perfect mind and memory bless be almighty God for the same do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following (that is to say, First my will and desire is that all my estate both real and personal be kept together for the term of six years, and the proceeds to be applied to the raising and schooling of my children which is under age & stands in need of schooling; also to pay off such legacies as may hereafter be named. 2nd. It is my will and desire that the above clause shall not prevent any of my children or my wife from receiving their legacies _____ able to the under written clauses. 3rd. I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife, Linnah Griggs after the expiration of six years four negroes, viz, Sarah, Fanney, Davy & Farrow, them and their increase for ever: also all my household and kitchen furniture, that is not hereafter named & devised, also two beds & furniture, two bay mares, one black horse Sam, one bay mule Jenny, one riding chair & harness, four cows & calves and the stock of hogs & sheep which may remain after the above time of six years. Also I lend unto my beloved wife Linnah Griggs after the above term of six years my tract of land which I now live on including all that appertains unto the same during her natural Life. (p. 24) 4th. I give and bequeath unto my daughter Polly Griggs a negro woman by the name of Harriot which she has now in possession. Also I give unto my daughter Polly one other negro girl Mason, them & their increase for ever, also I give Nanie & her increase to my daughter Polly Griggs to have & receive full possession after the expiration of six years & not before. 5th. I give and bequeath unto my son John W. Griggs one negro man Daniel which he has now in possession, also one other negro boy Gabe after the expiration of six years he is to receive & have forever: also at the same time he is to receive five hundred dollars in cash. 6th. I give and bequeath unto my daughter Jane Joice Chambers one negro woman by the name of Minney which she has now in possession with her increase forever. Also one thousand dollars which is to be paid out of my present crop. 7th. I give unto my son Henry Griggs two negroes Stephen a young fellow & Mary a young woman and his increase for ever which said negroes he has now in possession, also five hundred dollars to be paid Christmas twelve months, also one negro girl by the name of Harriot which he is to receive after the expiration of six years with her and her increase for ever. 8th. I give & bequeath unto my son William W. one negro woman Milly which he has now (p. 25) in posssession with her increase for ever, also one feather bed and furniture, also one other negro man by the name of Peter which he is to receive after the expiration of six years to him & his heirs for ever. Also after the expiration of six years I give and bequeath unto my son William my tract of land which I bought of my brother John Griggs, also the tract of land I now live on at the death of my wife Linnah Griggs to him & his heirs forever. 9th. I give and bequeath unto my son Green B. Griggs two negroes, Arch a man & Bob a boy and fifteen hundred dollars, also a bay Deomead mare, saddle & bridle to be delivered to him when he arrives to the age of twenty one years of age, also one bed & furniture, also one other negro man by the name of Bear to be rec'd after the expiration of six years, all of which property is to be to him & his heirs forever. 10th. I give and bequeath to my son Bryant Griggs two negro boys by the names of Sutton & Jim, one Sorrel mare by the name of Rosetta, one saddle & bridle, one feather bed and furniture, five hundred dollars in cash, my Terrell tract of land including all the land which may join it of mine on the north side of the Sparta road, all of the above legacy is to be delivered to him when he arrives to twenty-one years of age, also one other negro boy Jack to be rec'd after the expiration of six years, all of which property to him & his heirs forever. 11th. I give and bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth Griggs (p. 26) when she arrives to lawful age or married two negro girls by the names of Moriah and Patience, one feather bed and furniture and one hundred and seventy-five dollars, also after the expiration of six years two other negroes Becky & Amy, all of which property is to be her and her heirs forever with their increase. 12th. I give and bequeath to my daughter Linnah Griggs when she arrives to lawful age or marries two negro girls Selvey and Charlot and their increase, one feather bed and furniture and one hundred & seventy five dollars, also after the expiration of six years, one other negro woman by the name of Milley which I bought of Whitehurst with her increase all of which property is to be to her & her heirs forever. Lastly, I give and bequeath unto my grandson William G. Chambers one hundred and fifty dollars to be paid after the expiration of six years. I also give and bequeath unto my sons, Henry Griggs, Green B. Griggs and Bryant Griggs and my two daughters, Eliza M. Griggs and Linnah Griggs, one cow & calf each. it is my will & desire that my crop of every kind shall be turned into money, after first paying my debts and laying in a support for my family which is to continue together for six years, the balance to be appropriated to the payments of money to legacies. All the rest of my estate I give (can not make out last line of p. 27). I do hereby appoint my wife Linnah Griggs, my sons John Griggs & Wm. Griggs and my friend Duke Hamilton my executix and executors of this my last will and testament, hereby evoking all former wills by me made. (seal) Signed, sealed & delivered In presence of James Barnes, Burwell Wynn, Moses Ingram Hancock Inferior Court Sitting For Ordinary purposes 1st December 1817 The last will and testament of William Griggs Senr. dec'd was proven in open court by the oaths of James Barnes, Burwell J. Wynn and Moses Ingram the subscribing witnesses and ordered to be recorded and letters voluntary granted William Griggs one of the nominated executors who was duly qualified. (p. 28)
