Mr Heatley in question # 4 referred to Camp Stephens. Camp Stephens was located near, Griffin, Spalding County, Georgia. The following information was obtained from pages 72/73 “History of Griffin, Ga, 1840-1940 written by Quimby Melton, Jr. “Spalding County was designated a mobilization area at the outbreak of the war, and most of the troops which went into the Confederate Army from Georgia passed through Griffin………Camp Stephens was on McIntosh Road and was for Infantry troops. Fortifications were built there and were occupied late in the war to defend Griffin, then a hospital center. But Union forces bypassed them. A historical marker for Camp Stephens reads, “Confederate Camp Stephens, named for Alexander H. Stephens of Georgia who was the vice president of the Confederacy, was located approximately one-half mile from this spot on McIntosh Road. It was the Infantry Camp. The Cavalry Camp, known as Camp Milner, was located near Griffin also at what is now the city’s Municipal Park. Practically all the troops which went to the Confederate Army from Georgia were mobilized at these two camps…….” _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ QUESTIONS FOR WITNESS STATE OF GEORGIA, Haralson County J.
