Sewell. This family saw a lot of violence. This article appeared two years later in the Atlanta Constitution on September 3, 1934: GA. PAIR SLAIN IN GUN FIGHT WITH WOUNDED OFFICER TALLAPOOSA, Ga. Sept. 3. A street battle in the downtown section early Sunday morning between Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Ledlow [Frankie Sewell Ledlow was Melvin's sister] and Night Marshal Henry Pope resulted in death for the couple and serious wounds for the officer. The shooting occurred shortly after 1 o'clock Sunday morning. The fight is said to have started over an arrest made by Pope. According to police here, Marshal Pope had arrested a nephew of Mrs. Ledlow's, Kenneth Sewell [a son of Melvin], earlier in the night and was holding him in jail when the couple advanced on him. Mrs. Ledlow, armed with a shotgun, approached the car in which Marshal Pope was sitting and fired, the charge taking effect in his abdomen. As he slumped over, he answered the shot with a bullet from his pistol, which entered Mrs. Ledlow's head, killing her instantly. Pope shot again on the other side of the car, where Mr. Ledlow was advancing on him. The shot hit Ledlow in the head and he died en route to the hospital. Marshal Pope was taken to the hospital in Anniston, Ala., where his condition is said to be serious. Mr. and Mrs. Ledlow were widely known in this section. Funeral services were to be held today. Melvin V. Sewell (b. Feb 1890) probably died of his wounds; his tombstone indicates he died in 1932. > > Haralson County GaArchives News.....Sewell, Melvin B. shot by Paul Moody . > > "The Cleburne News" . > Heflin, Cleburne Co., Alabama > > NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, SEPTEMBER 29, 1932 > > TALLAPOOSA MAN IS SHOT IN ARGUMENT > > Melvin B.
