Hilton of Waco and his many descendants. The occasion was a family reunion when 97 of the 99 descendants gathered at the house of Mr. Hilton's daughter, Mrs.Charles Wright to make happy this estimable old Gentleman who had done so much for his country in the way of bringing up fine young men and women,all of whom he may well be proud of,making not only his career a success, but that of his grand- children,thereby giving his great-grand-children a bright future as far as their future success is concerned. Additional Comments: Lieutenant Hilton (They Called him Lieutenant) because in those days following a Great War it was quite fitting to and he was a duly commisioned Lieutenant shortly before the close of the Civil War. He enlisted at the outbreak of the Civil War and served gallantly and bravely throughout the four year period in the confederate volunteers,undr Gen. E. Kirby Smith,Gen. Joseph E. Johnston and General Pemberton.He saw service in some of the bloodiest battles the world had known up to that time.In the Battle of Atlanta (Peachtree Creek) He lost his right arm and with pride he wore " The Empty Sleeve" . Shortly after the close of the Civil War Mr Hilton entered the Mercantile Business in Tallapoosa Georgia and remained in this business until 1918 at which time he sold out and moved near Waco Georgia. According to Civil War Records S. L. Hilton was in Co., H, 56th Reg't Georgia Infantry -served as a Lieutenant in Co. H of 56th Reg't of Ga. Volunteers Cummings Brigade. Also, as a private in the same Company was taken prisoner at Vicksburg, Miss, July 4,1863 and paroled at Vicksburg, Miss, July 8,1863 furloughed at: Enterprise-,Miss. July 23,1863 Inspection report shows S. L. Hilton in hospital near Lovejoy Station on Sept, 16, 1864 wounded. He was awarded $100.00 a year pension.
