Kings and princes; peasants and pirates; they are with us forever. Take your ancestors philosophically, dig them out of their royal tombs, and lowly graves; treat them kindly, but exactly; be frank when you can, and respectfully reticent when can't." "From the County Court Note Book" Note: This manuscript was obtained via an Interlibrary Loan from the "Pomona Public Library" - City of Pomona, California. It is also available through the Georgia archives in Atlanta. FORWORD I have made a study of the Parkman family history for a period of years, working individually for a long time, later working with Miss Bonnie Parkman, Columbus, Georgia, and Mrs. Mabel Bulloch Harry, of Warm Springs, Georgia and I give Mrs. Harry credit for arranging with a Genealogist of Edgefield, South Carolina, to obtain court records from South Carolina for us. Some of the lines we have traced into the later generations are incomplete, because of inability to obtain dates and other information. It has been pleasant work, although slow and very tedious. I have tried to have all records verified and authentic. When making copies of Wills, Deeds, and other Court Papers, have tried to copy exactly. I am also indebted to the persons whose names are listed below for information and records: " Personal statements and family records of the late Mrs. Sarah Josephine Parkman Bussey of Warm Springs, Georgia, mother of Mrs. Ida Mae Brooks. " Personal statement and Bible records of the late Mrs. Julia C. Bulloch, of Warm Springs, Georgia, mother of Mrs. Mabel Bulloch Harry. " Personal statement and family records of Mrs. Lulu Williams Wright, of Greenville, Georgia, a granddaughter of the late Mrs. Lucrecia Parkman Williams of Harris County, Georgia " Bible records of the late Mr. And Mrs. John Daniel Parkman who came from South Carolina and settled in southern part of Muskogee County, Georgia in 1830, being the first Parkman's to come to this section You will realize that this is not a complete history, but I believe the descendants now living would like to have this information and I have tried to arrange it so anyone may be able to understand it. I certify that the records given below are correct. Ida Mae Bussey Brooks FOREWORD The first record we find of Parkman's in America date back to 1633, when Elias Parkman (son of Thomas) from England, came to Massachusetts, settling near Dorchester. His son was born at Salem, Massachusetts, 1635, died 1691, and married Sarah Trask. The Parkman's of Lowell and Boston are undoubtedly descendants of Thomas and Elias who were pioneers of that section. Their names appear among the first graduates of Harvard University, as ministers, lawyers, authors and historians. The well-known and eminent historian, Francis Parkman, born 1836, died 1893, of Lowell, Massachusetts, was one of this branch. His stature is now in the Hall of Fame in New York. It was claimed by the older generation of our family that these northern Parkman's were related to our clan here in the South. We think this is true and are still working on this and hope later to establish this connection. The first authentic record we have of the southern branch of Parkman's begins in the early 1700's in the part of South Carolina now known as Edgefield County. We believe they came to South Carolina from Virginia and possibly lived a while in North Carolina near the South Carolina State Line. We have authentic records of Henry Parkman, Sr. and Henry Parkman, Jr. among the citizens of Ninety-Six District, South Carolina, when the first census of the United States was recorded in 1790. At that time Henry Senior's household was listed as two males over sixteen years, and four males under sixteen and three females. While Henry Junior's household consisted of one male over sixteen years of age and one male under sixteen, four females and three slaves. They both owned valuable lands in Edgefield County and deeds recorded in Edgefield Court House substantiates this fact. In a Court Minute Book, dated 1776, a deed is recorded from Henry Parkman, Sr. to Henry Parkman, Jr., for one hundred and seventy acres of land and proven by the oath of Henry Rody, which was ordered to be recorded. There were other records of land owned by Henry Parkman, Jr., some of these we are giving below. We have not yet established the birth date of Henry Parkman, Sr., but we think he was living in Edgefield County prior to 1755, as his son, Henry Parkman, Jr., was born about that time. Henry, Sr. died after 1790. He married Millie Tillman (traditional). * NOTE: it has been established that Henry, Sr. married Hannah Crenshaw. Mrs. Brooks did not have any proof of Millie Tillman. (crp) From the Historical Commission of South Carolina, at Columbia, South Carolina, we find that he assisted in establishing American Independence, as the records show cashed up indents issued to Henry Parkman, Sr. for services as Wagon master, for services of a wagon and team and for the loss of two horses. Regarding his service with a wagon and team, I find from Carnegie Library, Atlanta, Georgia, from "Stub Entries to Indents", Book X-Part 1, Claims Against South Carolina Growing out of the Revolution, the following: No. -863 Issued the 1st of October 1785 to Henry Parkman for one pound four Shillings and three pence for three days Wagon Hire under Captain Lib. X Ryan per a/c audited. Principal L..14..3 ¼ Annual Interest L..2..4. South Carolina was the only State in the Union that paid her soldiers out of her own Treasury. Henry Parkman, Jr., born about 1755, in 96th Dist., SC, and died there after 1817, was the son of Henry Parkman, Sr., and his wife, Millie Tillman Parkman (Hannah Crenshaw). He married about 1775 in 96th District, South Carolina Massey or Massa Minter, born in 1761 in 96th District, South Carolina and died there after 1817. She was one of the daughters of Joseph Minter and his wife, Anna Maria Goode or (Gooch) of Abbeville County, South Carolina, coming there from Virginia, both of whom mention Masssey or Massa in their wills. Her mother married secondly, Maj. John Williams of Edgefield District, SC. He died in 1794. See Will Book A, Page 98, Edgefield County Court House for John Williams' will. Below is a copy of the will of Anna Maria Williams, mother of Massey, or Massa Minter Parkman, wife of Henry Parkman, Jr.: WILL OF ANNAMERIAH WILLIAMS (Note: typed as appeared on will) "In the name of God, Amen, this being the last will and testament of Annameriah Williams being weak in body, but of perfect mind and memory and calling to mind that is appointed for all people once to die and after Death to Judgment do recommend my Soul to God that gave it to me and my body I leave to the Discretion of my Executors and friends to be buried in a decent and Christian like manner and as to my worldly goods I give and bequeath in manner and form following (viz): First: I give and bequeath to my daughter Mary Elam one Negro boy named Pleasant to be at my death her own dispose with out any clame or wright of her husband to Molest or clame the Negro Pleasant. We have not been able to find a record of the settlement of the estate of Henry Parkman, Jr. nor the estate of his wife. Both were living in 1817, and as we find no more records signed after that year, so presumably they were destroyed in some way if there were any. We said they died after 1817. There were not many schools in those days and only the very wealthy families had tutors for their children, or in some cases, they were sent to England to school. Henry and his wife might have had some education, but both signed court papers by making "their mark." Copy of Deeds Polly Bibb Edgefield Dist., S.C. Deed Book 15-1789. Joseph Parkman (3) born in 96th District, South Carolina. The only record we have of Joseph is that he married a Miss Susannah Boyd, a daughter of Edmund and Susannah Boyd of Edgefield County, South Carolina. Edmund Boyd was a Revolutionary soldier, lived and died in Old Edgefield District, South Carolina. Probably some of Joseph Parkman's descendants are living in that section now, as there are Parkman's in Edgefield County at the present time. Henry, Jr. may have had other children than the three mentioned above, but I do not have any record of them. John Daniel Parkman Branch of Parkman Family John Daniel Parkman (3) the son of Henry Parkman, Jr., (2) and his wife, Massa Minter Parkman, was born in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, March 24, 1776; died in Chattahoochee County, Georgia, August 24, 1854, married August 11, 1812 to Margaret Louisa Bartlett, Louisa was born January 4, 1791 and died February 26, 1886. Parkman, married at Torch Hill, Muskogee County, Georgia, September 14, 1837 to Susan Ann Blackburn, daughter of John and Serana Lowe Blackburn. There were thirteen children born to this union, namely: Theresa Ann (5), Henry Preston (5), Eliza Amanda (5), Mary Jane (5), Margaret Louisa (5), Martha Blandena (5), John Daniel (5), William Thomas (5), David R. Parkman (4), and his wife, Susan Ann Blackburn Parkman, was born November 21, 1854, died October 11, 1821, married Annie Cordelia James. There were four children to this union: Joseph Browne (6), Lilla Florence (6), Bonnie Maude (6), Albert Boykin (6). I will not attempt to run the John Daniel Parkman (3) line any further as the complete information is not available. The descendants of John Daniel Parkman (3) settled around Columbus, Georgia, but later scattered to other sections. As I previously stated, John Daniel Parkman (3) and Serana Parkman (3) were brothers and the sons of Henry Parkman, Jr. (2). The Serana Branch of the Parkman Family Henry Parkman, Sr. (1), and his wife, Millie Tillman Parkman (HANNAH CRENSHAW) whose record we have previously given. Henry Parkman, Jr. (2) the son of Henry Parkman, Sr. (1) and his wife Millie Tillman Parkman (Hannah Crenshaw), born about 1755, in 96th District, South Carolina, died there after 1817. Henry Jr. married about 1775, NOTE: marriage date was probably after 1775 because Massey Minter was first married to a William Jones. Massa Minter, who was born in 1761 in 96th District, South Carolina and died there after 1817. (See previously given record) Serana Parkman (3) the son of Henry Parkman, Jr. (2) and his wife, Massa Minter Parkman, was born in 96th District, South Carolina, about 1778 and died there (then Edgefield County) in 1816. Serana married in Edgefield County, South Carolina, to Lydia Huffman, daughter of John Huffman. Lydia was born in the same state and district in 1782 and died in 1862 in Harris County, Georgia. NOTE: It is thought that Serana might be the brother of Henry, Jr. crp This needs to be researched! Serana Parkman (3) was only 38 years old at the time of his death. His estate settled in Fall of 1816. He left a wife and seven children, all of whom are mentioned in the settlement of his estate. His wife came to Georgia with her children and died during the War Between the States, 1862, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lucretia Parkman Williams in Harris County, Georgia and is buried in that county at Shiloh. Mrs Lula Williams Wright, Greenville, Georgia, a great granddaughter of Lydia Huffman Parkman, has a quilt in her possession that was pieced and quilted by Lydia before the War Between the States. Their first child Jane Elizabeth (5) was born in Edgefield County, South Carolina, May 22, 1844. They moved to Cherokee County, Georgia, where they lived one year and where their second child was born, Mary Ann (5), born August 21, 1848. There was so much sickness there during that year that they moved to Meriwether County, Ga., the latter part of 1848, or early part of 1849. Henry V. Four children were born to Henry (4) and Mary Ann Parkman, in Meriwether County, Ga., viz: Julia Cordella (5); Lewis (5) died in childhood; Sarah Josephine (5); Alice Ida (5). Although Henry V. Parkman (4) was nearly sixty years old, he served as a Confederate soldier in the War Between the States. When coming to Meriwether County, he settled one mile south of Bussey's Cross Road, an old land mark of that section and engaged in farming. He was the first person in that section to terrace his land and his neighbors thought he was wasting time, although now every one knows the value of terracing. He built a large grist mill and gin on his plantation and they were in use until quite recently. He built a large pond, still known as Parkman Pond, (now the property of his daughter's family, the late Mrs. Julia C. Bullock), to obtain water for operating the mill and gin. The dam was built of rock by the slaves of the owner, some of these slaves were a gift to Mrs. Parkman from her grandfather, John Kilcrease (Gilchrist), and were brought to Georgia when they moved to that section. These good people were pioneers in Meriwether County and were prominently identified with the up building of that part of the state. Both were members of Macedonia Baptist church, and are buried in that church yard located near Manchester, Georgia. The five daughters of these Meriwether County Pioneers were all good Christian women and were outstanding in their community. Parkman (4), and Mary Ann Glanton Parkman, was born in Meriwether County, Ga., February 18, 1859, died in the same county October 10, 1915, married in Meriwether County, Ga., March 6, 1879 to William Thomas Bussey, who was born March 10, 1846, the son of William R. Bussey, born April 1, 1818, died February 5, 1863, and his wife Eliza (Curlee) Bussey, born July 15, 1928, died July 1, 1906; married January 10, 1845. Both buried at Macedonia Cemetery, near Manchester, Ga., also their only son and his wife, Sarah J. Parkman Bussey (5). William Thomas Bussey was only about seventeen years old when he entered the War Between the States and served as a Confederate soldier; he was a Corporal in Company B., 9th Regiment of Georgia Militia. A. J. Hinton, of Greenville, Ga., was Captain of this Company. Mr. Bussey was wounded in seven places, while serving in the forefront of the bloody fight at Griswoldville, near Macon, Ga., in the winter of 1864-65, and after being in the home to recuperate, coming by train from Macon to Geneva, Ga. and riding on a wagon of cotton from Geneva to his home at Bussey's Cross Roads, near Warm Springs, Ga. The war closed before he was able to join his Company. He was made a Master Mason in Union Lodge, F. & A. M., September 23, 1869; he with other brethren moved their membership and constituted Bussey Lodge, 320, F. & A. M., the meetings being held in his private home at Bussey's Cross Roads, he having set aside one room in his house for this purpose. His brethren honored him by naming the Lodge for him. He was elected Secretary, after declining the office of Worshipful Master, at their first meeting and served till December, 1896, when he was released at his own request, having filled this position with honor to himself and with fidelity to the trust reposed in him. He had also served in Union Lodge, as Secretary, serving twenty-three consecutive years. The Lodge was later moved to Bullochville, Ga., which town he, with his cousins, Benjamin F. Bulloch, and Cyprian Bulloch, Jr., founded about 1886 and operated the first store there under the name of Bulloch, Bussey & Company. The name of the town was later changed to Warm Springs, as the nearby spring of that name had become world famous. Mr. & Mrs. Bussey were influential citizens of Meriwether and always assisted in anything that was up building and beneficial to the community. (There are no grandchildren in this family to carry on the tradition, so Mrs. Brooks has given the above information about her father, thinking Mr. Bussey's numerous nieces and nephews might be interested in knowing these details about their "Uncle Babe" and as a matter of future record). The children of William Thomas Bussey and his wife, Sarah J. Parkman Bussey (5), were all born in Meriwether County, Ga. viz: 1. Mary Eliza (6), born Thursday, March 16, 1882, died Friday, November 25, 1892. 2. Daisy Lee (6), born July 24, 1884, married first, November 5, 1907 to Stephen L. Callier, by Dr. B. W. Bussey; married secondly, P. B. Long. 3. Ida May (6), born Monday, January 31, 1887, married October 19, 1910, to Felix C. Brooks, by Dr. B. W. Bussey. 4. William Henry Grady (6), born Tuesday, June 25, 1889, married October 18, 1914, to Rochelle Talbot 5. ______________ove) founded the Woman's Club of Warm Springs. And at? her suggestion that a group of women met at the home of her mother, Mrs. Sarah J. Bussey, in March, 1911, for this purpose. They called the Club, "The Bullochville Civic Improvement Club." The name was changed after the name of the town was changed. Mrs. Brooks was the first secretary of the Club and is now an honorary life member. ******************** Alice Ida Parkman (5) The record of Alice Ida Parkman has not been sent me and I can only give a small amount of information. 6-Alice Ida Parkman (5), (Missie), the sixth child of Henry V. In copying the dates, etc. from her grandfather's tombstone, she said the name was spelled "Surrana," but in all the court papers sent us from Edgefield, South Carolina, the name was spelled "Serana."
