The direct bloodline is as follows: Nancy Rebecca Hollis I Sarah Elizabeth Colvin I Bernice "Bernie" Deaton I Lonnie Dale Deaton I Amber Dawn Deaton I Alexander Deaton Haas & Zachary Deaton Haas PREFACE: Your author does not know the identity of the first person with the surname "Hollis" to arrive in the New World. It is known that an indentured servant named John Hollis arrived in Virginia (or Maryland) in the year 1683. As an indentured servant he was required to work seven years "according to the custom of the county in the like kind. In consideration thereof (his employer) doth hereby covenant...to pay for passing (passage) and to find and allow him meat, drink, apparel, and lodging, with other necessaries during the said term, and at the end of the said term to pay unto him according to the custom of the Country" (New World Immigrants, Vol I, by Michael Tepper). It is further known that a certain John Hollis was aboard either "The Ark" or "The Dove" that arrived in Maryland in 1833. "The Ark" was a 350 vessel manned by forty men under the leadership of a certain Governor Leonard Albert. Its passengers were identified as "gentlemen and adventurers and their servants" (Ship Passenger Lists, The South, 1538-1825, Carl Boyer). An Edith Hollis is recorded in "The Colonial Records of Virginia" under a section identified as "list of the living and the Dead in Virginia February 16, 1623." MEANING OF THE SURNAME "HOLLIS": The surname "Hollis" is English in origin and refers to "one who dwells by the holly trees" (see New Dictionary of American Family Names," by Elsdon C. Smith, p. 237. One must wonder how she managed without a husband and with so many children. It is not known why she left Sarah Elizabeth behind in Texas when she migrated to Oklahoma to participate in the 1893 Oklahoma Land Rush. One must wonder how Sarah Elizabeth felt about her mother as the result of this incident. Of course the family has always been unsure of the relationship between James Franklin "Frank" M. Thompson and Nancy Rebecca. It is regretted that "Frank" could not be more specifically identified. He evidently is buried in an unmarked grave somewhere in Washita Co., Ok. Interestingly, it is known that Nancy was a great lover of "snuff" and "dipped snuff" until the day she died. This was not unusual for women of her generation. Your author wishes he had had the opportunity to meet and become acquainted with Nancy Rebecca. Certainly, she had some fascinating family stories to tell. I wish I could have had the privilege of hearing her tell them. It is most regrettable that the father of William Hollis could not be identified. Unfortunately there are no records, legal documents, nor oral family history that would serve to identify his parents. Several of the Hollis men became quite successful financially. "Lot" Colvin (son of Nancy Rebecca Hollis) was considered the "backbone" of the Oklahoma Hollis-Colvin clan. He evidently frequently loaned money to other family members, including Bernice "Bernie" Deaton. Your author is quite proud of his Hollis heritage. APPENDIX al.
