Nov. 14 – Earnest Holliday, aged twelve years, was killed by James Dowell, aged sixteen, on the 5th day of Nov. Mr. A.G. Milner gave Earnest a two-dollar bill and sent him to Cleola to buy some meat. There he met James Dowell and he decoyed him off down the railroad about three hundred yards from the depot in Mr. J.P. Beck’s pasture murdered him and three his body in Mulberry creek. He then took the two dollars off his body and left him. He took the money to Mr. Jno. Harris and asked to get it changed, Mr. Harris told him that he could not change it; from there he went to Mr. J.P. Sutton’s and wanted to get it changed, Mr. Sutton asked what kind of bill it was, he told him he did not know upon examination found it to be a two dollar bill. As Earnest did not return his mother thought he had run away and had gone to his grandfather’s; after they found out that he was not there a warrant was sworn out for James Dowell on the 14th and he was arrested and brought to Cleola by bailiff Moore. A crowd of both white and blacks were gathered to search the creek and after a long search and the body was not discovered, they went back to the station and got the prisoner and he led the way to where the little boy’s body was found lying in the creek. Justice of the Peace B.R. Harris empanelled a jury to hold an inquest. Messrs. J.P. Sutton, J.P. Beck, Jno. Carlisle, Henry Vinson and Mercer Harris composed the jury. The verdict was that he came to his death on Nov. 5, by two blows inflicted on the left side of his head with some blunt instrument in the hands of James Dowell, crushing his skull and the same was murder in the first degree. He was placed in jail at Hamilton. This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 2.3 Kb
