Born May 6, 1920 in Hamilton, GA. to the late James Jefferson and Dora Rosamond Evans. Mrs. Self was the seventh of 13 children. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. July 9, 2006 at Striffler-Hamby Funeral Home, 4071 Macon Road with Pastors Don Wilhite and LaMax Thompson officiating. Interment at Parkhill Cemetery will follow. The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 p.m., July 9, 2006 at the funeral home. Devoted wife of the late James Self, Mrs. Self lived in Columbus for 69 years. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where for 29 years she taught the "Mary Self Ladies Class". Mrs. Self celebrated life by being a wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend to everyone. She was a shining example of a "Christian Woman" and a true Southern lady. When sharing her memories, poems, songs and tales, she created laughter and happiness. She proudly proclaimed her love to all. Left to cherish memories are her son, Raymond Self of Columbus; granddaughter, Tara (Nate) Trombetti; great grandsons, Jake and John-Paul of Deltona, FL.; sisters, Irine (Roy) Songer and Ivy Evans of Columbus; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and friends. Her family wishes to express their deepest gratitude for everyone's concern during her illness. We'll miss her kisses. Additional Comments: I'll miss her hugs, kisses and laughter. She truly was a "Southern Lady." Heaven is a brighter place with her there. She and Uncle James are holding hands and giggling at each other. Mary was born at home in Harris County at the corner of what is today Barnes Mill Road and Duke Road.
