Atlanta Constitution, 14 May 1907 
Hartwell, Ga., May 13 - Judge J. M. Thornton, Ordinary of this county was 
found dead in bed yesterday morning. He had been suffering from grip but was 
apparently much better when he left his office Saturday afternoon. Judge 
Thornton was one of the most popular citizens of this county and was for 
eighteen years tax receiver of the county, and has been for eight years 
Ordinary. He was sixty five years old and was a brave soldier in the 
Confederate army.

Elbert Co., GA marriage records show Jeptha Thornton and Susan F. Oglesby were 
married on 20 Sep 1859. Burial records for Northview cemetery in Hartwell, GA 
show Jeptha Mercer Thornton, born 8 Dec 1841, died 12 May 1907, CSA, and Susan 
Oglesby Thornton, born 24 Dec 1842, died 13 Jul 1903.
