Dyer of Heard County SARAH JANE GAY (daughter of Elias Gay and Louisa Stamps ) was born September 1842 in Georgia, and died Aft. 1900 in prob. Heard County, Georgia. She married NICHOLAS JEHIEL M. DYER October 23, 1859 in Carroll County, Georgia, son of WASHINGTON DYER and MATILDA GAY. He was born April 01, 1838 in Coweta County, GA, and died Aft. 1910 in prob. Heard County, Georgia. Notes for NICHOLAS JEHIEL M. DYER: Civil War Veteran - -Company K, 56th Regiment Heard County Dyer, N. J. M. -- Private - May 12, 1862. Pension records show he was captured at Baker's Creek, Mississippi May 16, 1863. Paroled at Fort Delaware, Delaware for exchange August 1863. Left command on 30 days' furlough March 1865. (Born in Georgia April 1, 1838.) Application for Soldiers Pension Questions for Applicants to Answer State of Georgia, Heard County N.J.M. Dyer of said county and state, hereby applies for the pension provided by the Act of 1910 to Confederate soldiers and submits his sworn statement with his testimony, after being duly sworn.....answers as follows to wit: 1. What is your name and where do you reside? N.J.M. Dyer, Heard County, Georgia, Roopville, GA Rt. 23 ? 2. How long and since when have you been a continuous resident citizen of this state? Since April 1, 1838, all of my life. 3. Did you enlist in the Army of the Confederate States or of the Organized Militia of the State from 1861 to 1865? I did. 4. When and Where and in what company and regiment did you enlist? April or May 1862 Heard County, Georgia Co. K 56th GA Reg. Inf. 5. How long did you remain in actual military service with the company and regiment? 3 years from April or May 1862 to April 1865. 6. When and where was your company and regiment surrendered or discharged from the service? April 1865, Greenville, NC surrendered. 7. Were you actually present with your command when it was surrendered or discharged? Was not. 8. If you were not actually present state specifically and clearly where you were. Was at home in Heard County, Georgia on furlow, sick. a. Where was your command when you left it? Montgomery, Alabama . b. When did you leave the command? March 1865 c. For what cause did you leave? Was sick, on furlow d. By whose authority did you leave? Furlowed by commanding officer e. For how long was your leave granted, in what way? 30 days f. Why did you not return to your command after leave expired? War ended. g. In what way were you prevented? Was an invalid h. What effort did you make to return? None, war was ended. i. Were you captured during the war? I was captured once. j. If so, when and where? In what prison were you held and when were you released? 1863 at Baker's Creek Miss. prison Fort Del., was parolled, and exchanged, entered service again, was in prison some 3 months. 9. What property of every description is owned, in the use, or possession and control of yourself or wife and it's cash value on 4th Nov 1908? 200 acres value $608., one mule $80., 3 head cattle $50, 1 hog #10. Household $25 ($35?) 10. What property of any kind have you or your wife disposed of and for what purpose since 4 Nov 1908, to whom and for what price? None 11. What property of every description of any kind and of any value now owned and in use, possession or control of yourself and wife and it's cash value? Same as # 9. 12. What annual or monthly income or earnings of yourself and wife and the source derived have you? About $75. per year 13. Are you drawing a pension or any amount from this state or the United States? No 14. Have you ever applied for the Georgia Pension and had it refused? And for what cause it was not allowed? Have never applied for a pension N. J.M. Glover of this State and County is hereby presented as a witness in support of the application of N.J.M. Dyer for the pension provided for in the Act of 1910 in said state, after being sworn.....makes answers to the questions as follows: 1. What is your name and where do you reside? A.J. Smith and F.M. Glover in Heard County, Georgia. 2. How long and since when have you known N.J.M. Dyer? Since 1860 3. Where does he now reside and since when has he been a bonafide continuing resident in this state and how do you know? Heard County, Georgia since I knew him in 1860. 4. When and where and in what Company and Regiment did N.J.M. Dyer enlist during the war from 1861 to 1865? May 1862 Heard County, Georgia Company K 56th GA Reg. 5. How did you obtain your information of this service? I was enlisted at the same time and place and was with him in the service. 6. How long within your own personal knowledge did he perform actual military service with his company and regiment? Three years from May 1862 to April 1865. 7. Where and when was his command surrendered for discharge? April 1865 Greenville, NC 8. Were you personally present at the surrender? Was not present. 9. If not, where were you and how came you there? Was at home on furlow, sick. 10. Was the applicant personally present with his command at surrender? Was not. 11. If not where was he and how came him there? Was at home in Heard County, Georgia on furlow, sick. 12. When did he leave his command? March 1865. Where was his command when he left it? Montgomery, Alabama. What cause did he leave? Sick, furlowed for 30 days. 13. How do you know all that you have stated to be true and if so, of your own knowledge? Of my own personal knowledge. 14. What effort did he make to return to his command and how do you know? None, war was over. 15. Was application captured as a prisoner? He was. If so, when and where? At Baker's Creek, Miss. In what prison was he held? Ft. Del. And when released? Was exchanged 1863 ??? til close of war. A.J. Smith F. ? Glover Sworn to and subscribed before me this 10th day of Sept 1910. T.W. Awbrey, Ordinary Heard County Ordinary's Certificate Sept 22, 1910 State of Georgia, Heard County I, T.M. Awbrey, Ordinary of said County, certify that I know the applicant N.J.M. Dyer, for pension is the person he represents himself to be and resides in said county. That I also know A.J. Smith and F.M. Glover the witnesses swearing to the service and E.M. Smith and EM. Hester, who are free holders that they are all residents of said county and were duly sworn before signing the foregoing affadavit and they are all truthful and trustworthy and their statements entitled to full faith and credit. That the tax results of Heard County show that N.J.M. Dyer and wife value for tax in 1908 $898. for 1909 $713. for 1910 and $745. Sworn under my hand and official seal this 22nd day of Sept 1910.
