Heard CO. GA - Wood Cemetery From: JodieK444@aol.com Subject: [RC] WOOD CEMETERY - COMPLETE TO DATE The WOOD family cemetery is located in a remote area on private property a few miles west of Franklin, Ga. in Heard County. It was first surveyed in 1976 by Lynda Eller and members of the Heard County Historical Society. At that time, the cemetery was badly overgrown with weeds and underbrush. Several large trees had sprung up within the burial area. Only 31 graves were found at that time. The cemetery was partially re-surveyed on March 5, 2000 by myself and the property owner. She had counted 40 graves...we discovered one more, for a total of 41. Then on March 15, 2000, a detailed survey was performed by myself, the property owner and the caretaker, who raked leaves away from the perimeter...we discovered 3 more graves, making a total of 44 graves thus far. Some of the graves are unmarked, with only a crude stone extending about 10"-12" above the ground, but obviously grave markers. All but two of the unmarked graves are child-sized. One is marked with a large unmarked headstone and piles of stones the length of an adult. The other one also is obviously the grave of an adult, judging by the distance between the head and foot stones, and is located just above the grave of Judge W.T. Wood. We surmised that it might be the grave of his personal servant. Three of the older graves are unmarked but are like stone "caskets," above the ground, with no inscription. They are child-sized. One has caved in. The remaining graves are well marked. They are arranged in three rows, except for the newly discovered unmarked ones which are slightly outside the "formal" burial area. My thanks to Lynda Eller for the tip about using corn meal to bring up the inscriptions. The results of the survey in its entirety appear below. I have transcribed the inscriptions exactly as they appear: DOSHA L. WOOD Daughter of Winston & Dicy Wood Born Augst 3, 1842 Died Augst 31, 1855 COL. You may contact her at deller@mindspring.com I hope this will help someone put the pieces of their pedigree puzzle together. If I have made errors in my notes, I welcome your corrections. Reading between the lines in this cemetery is so sad...so many babies.... I will be taking photos of all of these tombstones as soon as the weather clears up. If you have an ancestor buried here and would like a photo of their tombstone, please let me know which one(s) you want. They will be scanned and sent in e-mail.
