Stamps, widow of Rice E. Stamps Widow's Indigent Pension 1904 Name: Susan E. Stamps County: Heard Widow of Rice E. Stamps, Co. B 7th GA & Co. B 10th GA Cavalry State of Georgia, Heard County Susan E. Stamps of said State and County desiring to avail herself of the pension allowed to Indigent Widows of Confederate Soldiers under Act of General Assembly passed in 1900, hereby submits her proofs and after being duly sworn true answers to make to the following questions deposes and answers as follows: 1. What is your name and where do you reside? Susan E. Stamps, P.O. Roopeville, Heard County, GA 2. How long and since when have you been a resident of this state? I hve been a resident of state since birth April 1839. 3. When and where were you born? I was born April 18th 1839 in Meriwether County, Georgia. 4. When and where was your husband born. State his full name and when were you and he married? He was born Sept 20th 1836 in Coweta County, GA. (R.E. Stamps.) We were married Sept 21, 1858 in Coweta Co. GA. 5. When and where and in what Company and Regiment did your husband enlist or serve during the war between the states? He enlisted June 16th 1862 at Carrollton, GA in Company B 7th Regiment GA Cavalry. 6. How long did your husband serve in said Company and Regiment? About 2 years and six months. He arrived at home April 7, 1865. 8. Was your husband present at the time and place when his Company and Regiment surrendered? He was not present when it surrendered. 9. If not with his command at surrender, state clearly and specifically where he was, when he left command for what cause and by what authority? He was at home, he was cut off from the command in Virginia about the last of March or the first of April 1865. He was sick and could not get to his command. 10. When and where did your husband die? He died Jan'y 12, 1902 in Carroll County, Georgia. 11. Which of the following grounds do you base your application for pension, viz; age and poverty, infirmity and poverty or bliness and poverty? Infirmity and poverty. 12. State how long you have been in such condition that you cannot earn your support. My constitution and general health is wrecked and am worn out and not able to make a living for myself by labor of any sort. 13. What has been your occupation since your husband's death? Nothing, only a little housework, rec'd no pay for same. 14. How much can you earn gross by your own exertion or labor? Nothing. 15. What property real or personal or income do you possess and it's gross value? I have 50 acres of land in Carroll Co. valued $200. I returned 100 acres for taxation. This property is only held by me as a trustee for my husband's grandchildren. He left it to his grandchildren and the title with me to protect them and it could not be sold by me. It is not of a saleable return. 16. What property, real or personal did you possess at death of husband or he left you, and of the years 1899, 1900, 1901, 1902, 1903, 1904 and what disposition if any by sale or gift have you made of the same? I returned the above described property. 17. In what counties did you reside in 1899, 1900, 1901, 1902, 1903 and 1904 and what property did you return for taxation? In Carroll Co. up to Jan'y 1902 then to Heard Co. GA. 18. How have you been supported since the death of your husband and especially since 1899, 1901, 1902, 1903 and 1904? By my husband up to his death, since by my nephew. 19. How much did your support cost for each of those years and how much did you contribute by your own labor ir income? I don't know. I contributed nothing. 20. What was your employment during 1899, 1900, 1901, 1902, 1903 and 1904? Housework and received no pay for same. 21. Have you a family, if so, who composes such family? No, have no family. 22. Have you ever made application for pension before? No. Susan E. Stamps (signed). Sworn to and subscribed before me this 9 day of Sept 1904. Camp of said State and County having been presented as a witness in support of the application of Mrs. Susan E. Stamps for a pension, and after being duly sworn true answers to make to the following questions, deposes and answers as follows: 1. What is your name and where do you reside? L.J.M. Camp. I reside in Carroll Co. GA. My P.O. is Glenn ? R.F. D. #1. 2. Are you acquainted with the applicant Mrs. Susan E. Stamps. If so, how long have you known her? I am not acquainted with her. 3. Where does she reside and how long and since when has she been a resident of this State? I am informed that she resides in Heard Co. GA. Questions 1 through 8 answered with " I don't know". 9. How long have you known her husband? I met him first at Kingston, N.C. in August 1863. 10. When and where did Rice E. Stamps enlist in the war between the states and in what Company and Regiment did he enlist and how do you know this? He was in Co. B 7th Confederate Cavalry when I enlisted in the same Company and Regiment about August 1863. 11. Were you a member of the same Company and Regiment? I was. 12. How long did he perform regular military duty? Till just before the surrender in 1865. 13. When and where was his Company and Regiment surrendered and discharged from service? April 26th 1865 at Greensboro, N.C. 14. Were you with the command when it surrendered? I was. 15. Was Rice E. Stamps the husband of the applicant present? I don't know. 16. If not present, where was he? I don't know. 17. Answered I don't know. " Because I was with Co. B 7th Confederate Cavalry. In the latter part of the War we were consolidated and became the 10th GA Cavalry. 18. When and where did Rice Stamps die? I don't know. 19. through 30. answered "I don't know". L.J.M. Camp Affadavits of Physicians State of Georgia, Heard County Personally before me comes J.R. Daniel and J.W. Daniel both known to me to be reputable physicians of said County who being severally sworn say on oath that they have examined carefully Mrs. Susan E. Stamps, applicant for a pension and after such personal examination say that her physical condition is this: She is old and worn out, constitution and general health wrecked and not able to make a living for herself by labor of any sort. Perdue, Ordinary of said County and Ex-Officio Clerk of the Court of Ordinary, certify that the attached and foregoing one page of printing and writing contain a full , true and complete copy of marriage license and certificate of Rice E. Stamps and Elizabeth S.S. Hicks, as the same appears of record and file in this office. Witness my hand and seal of said Court at Newnan, GA this Sept 10, 1904. Stamps of said State and County and after being duly sworn on oath says that she desires to apply for a pension allowed under the Act of 1910 and submits testimony to make out the same, true answers makes to the following questions to wit: 1. What is your name and where do you reside? Susan E. Stamps, Bremen, Carroll Co. GA 2. How long and since when have you been a continuing resident in the State of Georgia? All my life, 72 years. 3. When, where and to whom were you married? Sept 20, 1858 Coweta Co. GA to Rice E. Stamps. 4. When where and in what Company and Regiment did your husband enlist as a soldier in the Confederate Army or Georgia Militia? June 1862, Carroll Co. GA in Co. B 7th Cav., afterward 10th Cav. 5. When and where did the commands of your husband surrender or discharge from the army? Greensboro, NC April 26, 1865. 6. Was your husband personally present at the time of the surrender or discharge of this Command? No. 7. If he was not present state clearly where he was. Got home 2 days before surrender. 8. Where was his Command when he left? On East side of Savannah River between Savannah and Augusta. a. For what cause did he leave his Command? Was detailed about 3 weeks before. b. By whose authority did he leave his Command? By the Officers that detailed him. c. For how long was he granted leave of absence? Indefinite, was detailed. d. What was his physical condition when he left his Command? Not good, had Neuralgia which caused him to lose his left eye. e. and f. and g. refers back to previous answers h. Was he captured by the enemy at any time? Yes i. If so when and where captured and where held as a prisoner and when and for what cause released? On Savannah River perhaps 3 weeks before surrender and paroled on the spot. j. When and where did your husband die? Were you residing together when he died? Carroll County, GA January 12, 1902. We were. 9. What property of any description did you own hold or control for your use and its cash value Nov 4, 1908? Life interest in 100 acres of land worth $8. per acre, $800. No other property. At my death this property goes to the children. 10. What property of any kind have you sold or given away since Nov 4, 1908? None 11. What property of any description of any value have you now? Life interest in 100 acres of land worth $800. 12. What are your annual earnings or income and their value? None Susan E. Stamps, (signature) Questions for Witnesses as to Service of Husband and Marriage State of Georgia, Carroll County Personally before me comes Wm. M. Allen, who after being duly sworn true answers to make to the following questions, answers as follows: 1. What is your name and where do you reside? Wm. M. Allen, Temple, GA. 2. How long and since when have you known Mrs. Susan E. Stamps the applicant? Not acquainted personally. 3. How long and since when has she continuously resided in this State? With her husband, ever since I've known him, 40 years or more. 4. When and to whom was she married? How do you know? Rice E. Stamps. I knew personally and saw the license. 5. How long and since when did you know her husband Rice E. Stamps? 48 years since 1862. 6. When where and in what Company and Regiment did Rice E. Stamps enlist? In June 1862 in Carroll County, GA in Co. B 7th Conf. Cav, aftewards 10th Conf. Cav. 7. Were you a member of the same Company? I was. 8. How long within your personal knowledge did he perform actual military service with his Company and Regiment? Nearly 3 years. 9. When and where did his Command surrender and was discharged? At Greensboro, NC April 26, 1865. 10. Were you personally present when it was surrendered? I was not. If not where were you? I was on special detail, detailed by Officers. 11. Was the husband of the applicant personally present at surrender? He was not. If not, where was he? At home, was present 3 weeks before. Was detailed as a Scout on Savannah River 3 weeks before surrender, by Officers. How long was he granted leave? Detailed Indefinitely. How do you know this? I was present when he left. 12. For what cause was he prevented from returning to his Command? I know that he was captured by the Yankees and paroled for exchange. 13. What effort did he make to return to his Command and how do you know this? I know that he was trying to cross the river to get back to his Command. The bridges were burned and that he was captured there. W.M. Allen (signature) Sworn to and subscribed this 21 day of September 1910. Affadavit of Two Freeholders State of Georgia, Carroll County Personally before me comes L. G. Smith and J.W. Bell, who on oath says that they are freeholders of said County and that they know Mrs. Susan E. Stamps of said County and know what property she owned on 4 Nov 1908 and it's cash value to b set out by Schedule A. as follows: Life Interest in 100 acres of land at $8. $800. We also know the property she has now in her possession use and control to wit: Life Interest in 100 acres of land worth $8. per acre $800. This land is willed to children at her death. J. W. Bell, L.G. Smith Sworn to and subscribed before me this 21 day of September 1910. W.J. Millican, Ordinary, Carroll County State of Georgia, Carroll County Personally comes, J.W. Bell, whom I certify to be a citizen of said county who is worthy of belief who being sworn by me says " I am acquainted with Mrs. Susan E. Stamps and was acquainted with her husband Rice E. Stamps, who died in Carroll County Jan 12, 1902. I know this to be true, and that they were living together as husband and wife and she has never remarried. J.W. Bell Sworn to and subscribed before me this 21st day of Sept 1910. W.J. Millican, Ordinary of Carroll County Georgia, Carroll County Personally came before me, G.W. Cook who being duly sworn says: The claimant (Rice E. Stamps) enlisted on or about the time stated by him to wit: On or about the 16 June 1862 in Co. B 7 Reg. Confed. Cav. because I was present and enlisted at the same time and in the same Co. with him at Carrollton GA. I know of my own knowledge that he was never absent from his command without proper leave and seldom at all for the same reason because I was present with him. I know that he remained in the service till the close of the war and was not at the surrender with him at Greensboro NC. Which was about the ? April 1865. I was at Sav'h on detail and was paroled in Atlanta. The Co. surrendered in NC and he came home with them a short time after Lee surrendered. I know his present physical condition and know from his appearance and his statements about it often made to me that he is still suffering with his old disease in the same way in his face and head. That he was ? being a man of honor and an old soldier of the time ? I believe every word he tells me. I never caught him in a story. I have no interest in this claim. Their detail was on the west side of the river. The Command on the other side. They tried to find a way across. Rode all night in the rain. There were no bridges and they couldn't find a way across and there he with 7 others fell into the hands of the enemy and were paroled on the spot and made their way toward Macon and went from there home to await exchanges and the surrender came within a few days after. Sworn to and suscribed before me and I certify that this affidavit was read to affiant before he was sworn and I certify that the character of the wit. is good and that he is entitlted to belief. G.W. Cook, X, his mark. The foregoing affidavit was made by G.W. Cook a member of the same Company and who was on th Pension Roll of Carroll Co. when he died. The affidavit was made Oct 22, 1900 for R.E. Stamps who was then applying for an Invalid Pension and failed to get proof of sufficient inability. G.W. Cook is now dead an this affidavit is attached for the consideration of the Commissioner of Pensions. G.W. Merrell Sept 21, 1910. Pension Disapproved 10/20/1910. Applicant fails to prove ? ? the absence of her husband from his lawful Command and ? accounting for him at the close of war. The two armies left Sav'h River first day J?? 1865. J.W.
