Hammond respectfully represents to your honorable board that he is a resident of Randolph County in the State of Alabama and that he resided in said State on the first day of January in the year 1899. That he enlisted in the service of the Confederate States as a private in Co. E in the ? ? Regiment and was on detach service and worked on goverment teams? on the ? day of Nov 1862 at LaGrange in the State of GA and that he was honorably discharged from service on the 26 day of April 1865 at LaGrange GA at surrender and that he did not desert the service of the Confederate States that he was wounded at or near LaGrange GA while in charge of a government team. That he is now unable to make a living may manual labor on account of said wound. That he is at the time of filing this application 67 years of age and that his post office address is Sewell, Ala; that he does not own property either in his own name nor that of his wife to the value of four hundred dollars, and that he has no children upon whom he can depend for support. Your petitioner files herewith a complete schedule of all the property owned by himself and wife. In consideration of the foregoing facts, your petitioner asks that his name be placed upon the pension rolls in the class that your honorable board may adjudge him to belong that he may participate in the division of the fund provided by the relief of Confederate and Alabama soldiers and widows by Act of the General Assembly approved Feb 10, 1899. J.B. Hammond, applicant (June 1899) Your petitioner J.B. Hammond respectfully submits that he enlisted in the service of the Confederate States as a Private. This man when elisted was maimed in his right foot for this reason: was detailed to secure a government team and never went to the front?, in Nov 1862, at LaGrange, GA and that he was honorably discharged from service on the 26th day of April 1865; that he was wounded near LaGrange in the state of GA whle in charge of a government team and by said team taking fright and running away; that he is now unable to make a living by manuel labor on account of said wounds. Hammond: This applicant on oral examination states he has four young children ro raise and care for and has no other children. On physical examination we learn that while acting in the capacity of a teamster and driving a government team, they ran away and as a result his right foot was crushed, left shoulder dislocated and spine injured and for these causes he is paralyzed in his lower limbs and effects locomotion by means of two crutches dragging his feet along with much difficulty. Hammond, X, his mark Civil War Widow's Pension application of Mrs. S.F. Hammons, widow of J.B. Hammons State of Alabama, Randolph County To the Honorable Board of Pension Examiners for said County Your petitioner, Mrs. S.F. Hammon, respectfully represents to your Honorable Board that she is a citizen of Randolph County in the State of Alabama and was such on the first day of January 1899; that she is the widow of J.B. Hammons who served as a Private in Co. E of the __ Regiment Volunteers; that her husband died on the 18 day of August 1907; that at the time of the death of her said husband his name was on the State Pension Roll as now existing and his last pension check was numbered 23412. That she has not remarried since the death of her said husband. She therefore respectfully asks your Honorable Board to place her name upon the pension rolls of the State as a member of the fourth class, that she may participate in the division of the fund provided for the relief of needy Confederate soldiers and sailors and their widows by act of the General Assembly of Alabama approved Feb 10, 1899. Hammons, X, her mark On oral examination the applicant states her children are all married, she does not keep house but lives with one of her sons. On physical examination we find her a small and delicate woman. She staets that she suffers greatly with cranial and facial neuralgia also with aching pains in her spine and limbs. Hammons was a Confederate Soldier and served as a Reserve at La Grange GA as Company E under General Sparrow and never did desert. B. Hammons who deposeth and says that she has become unable to work and are ? total blind in one eye and ask your honor to carefully consider my this affidavit of B. Hammons in regard to J.B. Hammons. Mrs. S.F. Hammons, X, her mark Sworn to and subscribed before me Feb 10, 1915. S.W Traylor, N.P. From the State of Alabama, Pension Bureau, Montgomery To: Mrs. S.F. Hammons, widow of J.B. Hammons You are hereby notified that you are ineligible to a pension under the laws of this State because "the military description of J.B. Hammons is vague and uncertain, viz "Private Co. E __ Regment Alabama . No regiment shown. " Within twenty days from this date you can appear before me at my office in the State Capitol in person or by counsel and other testimony by witnesses or the affidavits of witnesses in explanation or regutation of said charges. In case you make your defense by the affidavits of witnesses those affidavits must be signed and sworn to before the Probate Judge of your County and duly attested by his official signature. In the event that you fail within twenty days to make answers or defense to said charge, the charge will be taken as confessed and your default will be duly reported to the State Board of Pension Examiners for final determination.
