Awbrey, Ordinary Sept 20, 1928 The Adjutant General's Office Washington Comptroller's Department, State of Texas, Austin, Texas There are no rolls on file in this office for Company K 56th Regiment Georgia Infantry, Confederate States Army. No record has been found of the service, capture or parile of a man named Robert M. Dunlap or of that organization. Lutz Wahl, Major General, the Adjutant General September 24, 1928 Mrs. Vonie Dunlap, Sweetwater, Texas Dear Madam, I have on file your application for pension. You are advised that in reply to a request from this office to the War Department, Washington, D.C. for the military record of your deceased husband, Robert M. Dunlap, I have the following report: " There are no rolls on file in this office for Company K 56th Regiment Georgia Infantry, Confederate States Army." Since this report fails to identify Mr. Dunlap as a member of the military organization in which he claims to have rendered service as a Confederate soldier, and since there are no rolls on file of the Company K 56th REgiment Georgia Infantry, C.S.A., it will be necessary that the military record of Mr. Dunlap be proven by the testimony of at least two credible witnesses who personally know the service claimed by you, or you may prove his service by documents or other evidence that you may be able to furnish. If the military service of Mr. Dunlap is proven as required by the Statute, your application will have further consideration. Yours very truly, Comproller of Public Accounts Sweetwater Texas November 28, 1928 S.H. Terrell, Comptroller, Austin, Texas On reply to your letter of Sept 24, I will say my husband name was Robert Miner Dunlap. He was known here as R.M. Dunlap. His name ought to be on file somewhere in the War Department. I have heard him speak so often of his Company K 56 Regiment & of General Beuraguard. I don't recall his Captain's name. The old soldiers has died out till I can't find any of them. I feel like that I am entitle to a pension as I have no one to take care of me. Historical Society, reprinted in 1996) page 253: " Robert and Harriet Dunlap who had accompanied his parents from S.C. to Georgia decided to remain in Franklin (GA) however, where he worked as a shoemaker, rather than move to Alabama. Their children were: Rebecca Catherine (1836 - 1904), Amanda J. (1837 - 1914), Martha Sophire ( 1839 - 1910), John Henry, and twins, Harriet V. and Robert Manuel (1847 - 1927). Robert Minor and Harriet Dunlap and probably their youngest daughter fell ill and died of "bilious fever" in the mid 1850's; apparently they had been in poor health for some time. Their remaining five children were orphans with no other close family members in Georgia. A comtemporary account of their deaths was given by Dr. John W. Daniel of Franklin, Georgia who was 81 years old at the time he wrote a letter on August 13, 1931 to Vonnie Brazzil Dunlap in Sweetwater, Texas. A portion of this letter stated " The father and mother of the Dunlap children were both buried on the same day 2 and one half miles east of Franklin, Heard Co. GA (Lane-Shackeford Cemetery). My mother Mrs. Easconbly ? Daniel was at the funeral service, never had known of the family until that day, cast around and got each one of the girls housed in good homes in a very few minutes. She said to the ladies, you take your choice of the girls and I will take the one which is left, so she got Catherine Dunlap." The Dunlap children were thus separated from one another although they all continued to live in the same community. John Henry Dunlap went to live with Joseph Lane and Amanda went to J.W. Willliams. Robert M. went to Thomas Shackleford. Amanda Dunlap Eady and her husband Elcana (son of Johathan and Lucy Eady of Heard County) lived in Heard County until their deaths and are buried in Wesley Chapel Cemetery. They had several children but I have no information about them. Martha Sophire Dunlap Hawk was widowed when her husband Jacob, who was the son of Daniel and Nancy Hawk of Heard County, was killed while serving in the C.S.A. in 1865. He is buried on the battlefield in Bentonville, N.C. Martha is buried in Enon Grove Cemetery. John Henry Dunlap left Georgia for Texas while a young man. Robert M. Dunlap joined the C.S.A. as a drummer boy at the age of thirteen and was later allowed to fight as a soldier. He became a Baptist Minister and settled in Sweetwater Texas after the war. He married Vonnie Brazil in 1877. Catherine Dunlap married Thomas Coleman Moore (1836 - 1917) of Red bone in 1858. Their story is told in the section on Moore families. Written by Ken Waites.
