Hawk of Heard County, Georgia Widow of J.R. Hawk Affidavit to be Made by the Widow State of Georgia, Heard County In person came before the undersigned Ordinary in and for said County of Heard, Mrs. M.S. Hawk, who being sworn according to law, says under oath that the is the widow of J.R. Hawk who as a soldier in the service of the Confederate States and served as a member of Company K of the 56 Regiment of Georgia Volunteers; that he enlisted in said service on or about the 12th day of May 1862 and was in the Army up to March 19th 1865; that while in the Army he was on the 19th day of March 1865 at the Bentonville fight shot in the body near the region of the heart and a ball passing through the left lung. He lived about three hours when he died of the wound on the battlefield and was there buried. Deponent further swears that she was the wife of the said deceased soldier during his term of service in the Army, and that she has never married since his death. That she became his wife on the 30th day of November 1858 and that she has resided in Georgia continuously since her birth 1839; that Georgia is her home and was such on the 23rd day of December 1890, and since said date she has not lived in any other state or locality. Deponent as the widow of the said deceased soldier husband applies for the pension provided by the Act of the General Assembly of Georgia approved December 23, 1890 for the pension year ending February 15th, 1892 and herewith tenders the proof of her right to receive the allowance granted by said Act. Crain, Ordinary Affidavit for Three Witnesses State of Georgia, County of Heard In person before the undersigned Ordinary in and for said County, witnesses J.H. Lane, Elkane Eady and J.M. Hawk each known to said attesting officer as truthful, reliable and reputable witnesses, who severally say under oath that from their own personal knowledge, Mrs. M.S. Hawk of the County of Heard, State of Georgia, is the widow of J.R. Hawk who was a soldier in Company K of the 56th Regiment of Georgia Volunteers. That said soldier enlisted in the service of the Confederate States on or about the 12th day of May 1862. That while in said service, or by reason of said service in the Army, he lost his life as follows: At the Battle of Bentonville he was shot in the body near the region of the heart, the ball passing through the left lung. That he lived about three or four hours then he died of the wound on the 19th day of March 1865. That we saw him after he was dead and he was buried on the battlefield. We further swear that Mrs. M.S. Hawk was the wife of said soldier during the service and that she has not intermarried since his death and that she resides in Heard County of the State of Georgia. Hawk, who being sworn says on oath that she is a bona fide resident of said County of Heard, State of Georgia and that she has resided in said State continuously ever since her birth 1839. That she is the widow of J.R. Hawk who was a soldier in Company K of the 56th Regiment of Georgia Volunteers; that he lost his life on the 19th of March 1865 at the battle of Bentonville, N.C. That she has been allowed a pension for the year ending February 15th 1892 and now applies for the allowance provided by law for the year ending Feb 15th 1893. M.S. Crain, Ordinary For Widows Heretofore Allowed Pensions State of Georgia, County of Heard Personally comes M.S. Hawk, who being sworn says that she is a bona fide resident of said county of Heard, State of Georgia, and that she has resided in said state continuously ever since her birth October 1839. That she is the widow of J.R. Hawk who was a soldier in Co. K of the 56th Regiment of Georgia Volunteers; that he lost his life on the 19th day of March 1865 at the battle of Bentonville North Carolina. He was shot with minnie ball through the left lung area and died of the wound on the battlefield. That she has heretofore been allowed a pension as a resident of Heard County and now applies for the pension for the year ending February 15th 1898. M.S. Hawk, X, her mark Sworn to and subscribed before me this 7 day of January 1898. Robt. G. Crain, Ordinary Note: Similar affidavits with same information filed in 1899, 1900 through 1907. Several affidavits gives her birth year as October 1840 (with previous affidavit stating her birth year/month was October 1839.) The 1907 affidavit states that her birthdate was October 14, 1839. Additional Comments: I believe that J.R. Hawk is Jacob R. Hawk and his widow M.S. Hawk is Martha Sophire Dunlap, the daughter of Robert Minor Dunlap and Harriet (maiden name not documented) who lived in Heard County, Georgia. 1860 census Heard Co. GA June 14, 1860 page ??
