G Crain of Heard County, GA to receive and receipt for the pension allowed and request that he remit same to me in person. Witness my hand and seal this 15 day of January 1897. W. C. Shira of said State and County, desiring to avail himself of the Pension Act approved Dec 15th 1894, hereby submits his proofs and after being duly sworn true answers to make to the following questions, deposes and answers as follows: 1. What is your name and where do you reside? W.C. Shira Heard County Georgia Rockalo GA. 2. Where did you reside on Jan 1st 1894 and how long have you been a resident of this State? In Heard County ever since the War. 3. When and where were you born? Gwinnett County Georgia 4. When and where and in what company and regiment did you enlist or serve: April 1862 Roanoke Ala Company F 59 Regiment Ala 5. How long did you remain in such company and regiment? Three years 6. For how long a period did you discharge regular military duty: Three years 7. When where and under what circumstances were you discharged from service? Was discharged at Appamatox Court House VA in 1865 at the close of the war. 8. What is your present occupation: Farmer 9. How much can you earn gross per annum by your own exertions or labor? About $30. 10. What has been your occupation since 1865: Farming 11. Upon which of the following grounds do you base your application for pension, viz; age and poverty, infirmity and poverty or blindness and poverty? Infirmity and Poverty 12. State how long you have been in such condition that you could not earn your support; give a full and complete history of the infirmity and it's extent: I have Rhumatism so I can't work at times; suffer all the time, am nearly blind and suffer with neuralgia of the head and all broken down in health. 13. What property, effects or income do you possess and its gross value? Nothing but a small amount of house and kitchen furniture and 2 pigs. 14. What property, effects or income did you possess in 1894, 1895, 1896 and what disposition if any did you make of same? Nothing more than I have now except a cow and calf I had to dispose of to help me live. 15. In what county did you reside during those years and what property did you then return for taxation? In Heard County in 1895, $40., in 1896 $25. 16. How were you supported during the years 1895 and 1896? By what I could do and the help of my family. 17. How much did your support cost for each of those years and what portion did you contribute thereto by your own labor or income? About $70. I contributed about 1/3. 18. What was your employment during 1895 and 1896; what pay did you receive in each year? Farming; received nothing but a scanty living. 19. Have you a family, if so, who comprises such family; give their means of support; have they a homestead? I have a wife and five children. They have nothing, no homestead. 20. Robt G Crain, Ordinary of Heard County January 15, 1897 Question for Witness State of Georgia, Heard County E.J. Freeman of said State and County, having been presented as a witness in support of the application of W.C. Shira for pension, and after being duly sworn true answers to make to the following questions, deposes and answers as follows: 1. What is your name and where do you reside? E.J. Freeman in Heard County 2. Are you acquainted with W.C. Shira the applicant, if so, how long have you known him? Ever since 1862. 3. Where does he reside and how long has he been a resident of this State? Ever since the year 1865. 4. Do you know of his having served in the Confederate Army or the Georgia Militia; how do you know this? I do. I was a member of the same company and regiment. 5. When, where and in what company and regiment did he enlist? In April 1862 Co. F 59 Regiment Alabama. 6. Were you a member of the same company and regiment? I was. 7. How long did he perform regular military duty and what do you know of his service as a Confederate soldier and the tiime and circumstances of his discharge from the service? Three years. He made a good soldier. He remained with the company till the surrender in 1865. Questions # 8 t hrough 15 not answered. E.J. Freeman, Witness Sworn to and subscribed before me this 15 day of January 1897. Robt G. Crain, Ordinary Affadavit of Physicians State of Georgia, Heard County Personally came before me C.C. Brittain and W.A. Ware, both known to me as reputable physicians of said county who being severally sworn, say on oath that they have examined carefully W.C. Shiery, applicant for pension under the Act of 1894, and after such personal examination say that his precise physical condition is as follows: He is suffering from Rheumatism, nearly Blind, and suffers from Neuralgia of head. Constitution all broken down and general Debility. We further say on oath that the physical conditon of the applicant renders him unable to labor at any work or calling sufficient to earn a support for himself and that we have no interest in said pension being allowed. Robt G Crain, Ordinary January 6, 1899 For Applicants Heretofore Allowed Pensions State of Georgia, Heard County Personally appears, W.C. Shira of Heard County, State of Georgia who being duly sworn says on oath that he is a bona fide citizen and resident of said County and State and has reside in said State continuously ever since the birth ___ day of ___ 1844; that he is 55 years old and by occupation a Farmer; that he enlisted in the military service of the Confederate States during the war between the States and served for the term of three years in Company F of 59 Regiment of Alabama Volunteers; that his physical condition is as follows: He is suffering from Rheumatism, impaired in sight, constitution and general health all broken down. That his property consists of the following items: Household and kitchen furniture of the value of fifteen dollars; that by reason of his physical condition and poverty he is unable to support himself by his own exertion or labor and that he receives no pension other than the one herein applied for. Depondent desires to participate in the benefits of the Act approved Dec 15, 1894 and the acts amendatory thereof and makes application for the pension to which he is entitled for the year 1899. W.C. Sworn to and subscribed before me this Jan 1, 1899, Robt G Crain, Ordinary January 1, 1900 For Applicants Heretofore Allowed Pension State of Georgia, Heard County Personally appears, W.C. Shira of Head County, State of Georgia who being duly sworn on oath that he has resided in said State continuously since birth 1843, that he is 56 years old, that his physical condition is as follows: all crippled up with Rheumatism, that his property consists of household and kitchen furniture and one old mule; that by reason of his physical health and poverty he is unable to support himself by his own exertions or labor and that he receives no pension other than the one herein applied for; that he makes application for the pension to which he is entitled for the year 1900. W.C. Shira, X, his mark January 5, 1901 For Applicant Heretofore Allowed Pensions State of Georgia, Heard County Personally appears, W.C. Shira of Heard County, State of Georgia who being duly sworn on oath says: that he has resided in the state continuously since birth, March 1842, that he is 57 years old and by occupation a farmer; that his physical condition is as follows: he is all crippled up with Rheumatism, constitution and general health broken down, suffering from general debility; that he desires to make application for the pension to which he is entitled for the year 1901. W.C. Shira, X, his mark January 10, 1907 For Applicants Heretofore Allowed Pension State of Georgia, Heard County Personally appears, W.C. Shirah of Heard County, State of Georgia who being duly sworn says on oath that he has resided continuously in said State since __ March 1843; that he is 63 years old; that his physical condition is as follows: Rheumatism, all drawed up, not able to work but little; that he makes application for the pension wo which he is entitled for the year 1907; that he is a resident of Heard County. Shirah, X, his mark April 1, 1932 Application for Pension Due to a Deceased Pensioner, To be Paid to the Ordinary for Expenses of Funeral and Last Illness Georgia, Heard County Personally before me the Ordinary of said County, comes J.H. Shirey of said County who after being duly sworn on oath says that he knew W. Calvin Shirey of said County and that said Pensioner was on the Pension Roll of said County at the time of his death which occurred in Heard County in this State on the 29th day of March 1932 and that pensioner left no widow surviving and no estate of value sufficient to pay these funeral expenses, which amounted to the sum of $100. per sworn statements fully and completely itemized hereto atttached. Acting Ordinary of said County do certify that I personally know W. Calvin Shirey who is a resident citizen of said County, that I knew him in life and that this was the same person whose name appears on the Pension Roll of Heard County and was paid a pension of Thirty dollars in said County in 1932 and I now believe said pensioner to be dead; and that the instructions at the foot of this voucher have been carefully observed in making up this voucher and the bills which are attached hereto.
