Freeman of said State and County, desiring to avail himself of the Pension Act approved December 15ht, 1894 hearby submits his proofs, and after being duly sworn true answers to make to the following questions, deposes and answers as follows: 1. What is your name and where do you reside? (give State, County and post-office) E. J. Freeman in Heard County, Ga, Texas, Ga 2. Where did you reside on January 1st, 1894 and how long have you been a resident of the state? In Heard County - have been a resident Sixteen years. 3. When and where were you born? In Heard County in 1844 (Note: 13 Feb 1843 per headstone at Macedonia Baptist Church) 4. When and where and in what company and regiment did you enlist or serve? In April 1862 Company F, 59th Alabama 5. How long did you remain in such company and regiment? about three years from the time I enlisted till the Surrender in 1865. 6. For how long a period did you discharge regular military duty? about 3 years. 7. When, where, and under what circumstances where you discharged from service? I was shat at during bluff in May 1864 was sent home and was never able to return till about the surrender 1865. 8. What is your present occupation? Farmer 9. How much can you earn (gross)per annum by your own exertions or labor? about $30 10. What has been your occupation since 1865? Farming 11. Upon which of the following grounds do you base your application for pension, viz. : first "age and poverty," second "infirmity and poverty" or third "blindness and poverty"? Infirmity & Poverty 12. If upon the first ground, state how long you have been in such condition that you could not earn your support? If upon the second, give a full and complete history of the infirmity and its extent? If upon the third state whether you are totally blind and when and where you lost your sight? About five years ago my leg that shot commenced failing me & it has been getting worse all the time so that I can't hold out to but a little while at a time. 13. What property, effects or income do you possess and its gross value? I have a calf three pigs & a small amount of House & Kitchen furniture worth $25. 14. What property, effects or income did you possess in 1894, 1895, and 1896 and what disposition, if any, did you make of same? Nothing more than I have now except a horse that belong to my son that I paid Tax now I have to give up the horse now. 15. In what County did you reside during those years and what property did you then return for taxation? In Heard County the amt stated in question above. 16. How were you supported during the years 1895 and 1896? By the help of my children that has now left me and by what I could do. 17. How much did your support cost each of those years, and what portion did you contribute thereto by your own labor or income? About $70. I can contribute about 1/3. 18. What was your employment during 1895 and 1896? What pay did you receive in each year? Farming & sending to a little mill. About $60. 19. Have you a family? If so, who composes such family? Give their means of support? Have they a homestead? I am family wife and four children then have no means of support and no homestead. 20. Shira, of said State and County, having been presented as a witness in support of the application of E. J. Freeman for pension under the Act approved December 15th, 1894, and after being duly sworn true answers to make to the following questions, deposses and answers as follows: 1. What is your name and where do you reside? W. C. Shira - Heard County, Georgia 2. Are you acquained with E. J. Freeman, the applicant, is of (sic) how long have you known him? I have known him ever since 1862 3. Where does he reside, and how long has he been a resident of this State? Heard County - been a resident sixteen years 4. Do you know of having served in the Confederate army or the Georgia militia? How do you know this? I do I was in the dame company with him 5. When where and in what company and regiment did he enlist? Company F, 5th Alabama 6. Were you a member of the same company and regiment? I was 7. How long did he perform regular military duty, and what do you know of his service as a Confederate soldier, and the time and circumstances of his discharge from service? About three he made a good soldier he was wounded in 1864 sent home and was not able for duty nor more till about the surrender. 8. What property, effect or income has the applicant (Give your means of knowledge) I live hear him he a had a cow & calf & kids & some little house & kitchen furniture. 9. What property, effects or income did the applicant possess in 1895 and 1896, and what disposition, if any did he make of same? I don't know that he had anything more that he has now. 10. What is the applicant's occupation and physical condition? Farming. He is very feeble & badly wounded & can't work much. 11. Is the applicant unable to support himself by labor of any sort, if so, why? He is not able to support himself on account of his wound received in the war & bad Health. 12. How was he supported during the years 1895 and 1896? By what he could do & the help from his children. 13. What portion of his support for these two years was derived from his own labor or income? I don't think more than one 1/3 14. Give a full and complete statement of the applicant's physical condition that entitles him to a pension under the Act of December 15, 1894? He is in bad health & the wound received in the war has become so in the last 4 years that can't work so much 15 What interest have you in the recovery of a pension by the applicant?
