Tompkins gathered at Tompkins Mill Tuesday with their families for a barbecue. _________ Mr. J.W. Craven, Jasper, Ala., is visiting Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Gentry. ________ Miss Ida Mae Hammond of Marion, Ala., is spending this week with Mr. and Mrs. P.T. McCutchen. __________ Mr. and Mrs. Watson Noles of Norfolk, VA., and Mrs. Dan Johnson of Cairo, are the guests of Mrs. and Mrs. Henry Noles. ______ Mrs. Baxter Chappell, Miss Irma Jean Tompkins, Mr. Willard B. Misher, of Akron, Ohio, Mr. Kyle Tompkins of St. Paris, Ohio, accompanied home by Lewis Tompkins, arrived Saturday to visit Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Tompkins. _______ Mr. W.D. Hammond, popular Alabama Chilean Nitrate salesman, Marion, was the guest of relatives in Franklin the past weekend. _______ Mrs. Nina Tompkins Granade and son Ben, Atlanta, are spending the week among the old home scene and attending camp meeting. ________ Mr. James Taylor, Miss Christine Meadows, Vidalia, Miss Jnoella Taylor and Mr. Joe Perry of Atlanta, spent the weekend with Dr. and Mrs. J.L. Taylor. _______ Mr. and Mrs, Grady H. Ridley, Mrs. Frank Royston and little daughter Roslyn, are at the World's Fair in New York. ________ Mrs. Ben Cagle, Mrs. Sallie Evans and James, Rob and John Oswald, returned this week from a delightful visit to Oklahoma. _________ Mr. and Mrs. William Neal, Miss Margaret Neal, Atlanta, Dr. and Mrs. Roy Denney, Milledgeville, Mrs. H.L. Barker and children of Carrollton, were guests of Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Denney during camp meeting. ________ Dr. and Mrs. G.W. Hammond and Bobby Hammond, Newnan, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Hammond, Atlanta, Mrs. J.H. Daniel and children, Cedartown, Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Bonner, Barnesville, were the guests Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. G.A. Adams. _________ The mail car to Newnan twice a day is quite a convenience to the traveling public. Mail carrier Upchurch is the acme of courtesy and people delight to travel with him. In both his morning and afternoon schedules he makes close connection with trains and buses at Newnan. _______ At a lovely reception Saturday afternoon, Mrs. Stanton Adams entertained numbers of friends of Miss Mary Whitaker, bride-to-be, when a large array of presents were brought for presentation to the honoree. ________ Mr. J.E. Johns, Roswell, New Mex., accompanied by his son Jimmie Jr. also by Mrs. Henry Haney and daughters Elizabeth and Jimmie Ruth of Birmingham, Ala, spent a while amid their Franklin childhood scenes Wednesday. Mr. H.S. McWaters. _________ News and Banner, ISSUE of Friday, September 1, 1939 Miss Mary Whitaker, a September bride-elect, recently was the central figure at a micellaneous showering given by Mrs. Stanton Adams. Pink and green was the color scheme and summer flowers decorated the rooms. On the dining table the centerpiece was all of white flowers; phlox, altheas, petunias and clematis were arranged to make a lovely picture with their setting of silver candlesticks holding white tapers, on a table covered with a beautiful cut- work tablecloth. The receiving line was composed of Mrs. Adams, Miss Whitaker, Mrs. G.J. Whitaker, mother of the bride-elect, Mrs. Minnie Kelley mother of the groom- elect, and Mrs. Otis Kelley, sister of the groom elect. Mrs. Adams was assited in entertaining by Mrs. Wallace Bonner, Mrs. Melson Goodson, Mrs. V.O. Smith, Mrs. Carl Simonton, Mrs. Frank Gearreid, Mrs. J.D. Lipford and Miss Louise Lipford. During the afternoon about sixty friends called and enjoyed seeing the radiant bride elect, and her gifts, which were attractively displayed in the guest room of Mrs. Adams' home. ______________ Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Barrow, of Bowdon, have discovered a fruit upon their grape vine, which might well be called a "grapple". The curious specimen is obviously a combination of an apple and a grape, formed when pollen from an apple blossom was accidentally combined with a nearby grape bloom. Barrow has discovered one genuine apple growing upon the same grape vine. ___________ CENTRALHATCHEE NEWS Miss Noverline Prince came home Sunday after a week's stay at Carrollton Clinic. ____ Misses Lurlie and Novelle Ham came home Saturday after a six week's stay at Geogia Tech. ________________ Misses Hazel Lane and Fannie Mae Jackson returned home Saturday from Athens, where they have been in school all summer, Miss Lane finishing, Miss Jackson having another year. They are two of the popular teachers here. ________ The Stevens reunion met last Sunday at Mr. Homer Stevens. He has four sisters who with their families were present. They are Mrs. Annie Hyatt of near College Park; Mrs. Tom Spradlin, LaGrange; Mrs. Leonard Hyatt, Centralhatchee; Mrs. Frank Huffman, Carrollton. Mr. Stevens is the only man in the old family surviving. He had one brother , Bige Stevens who passed on several years ago, one half brother John Gray who passed away last year. Both his sisters--in-law were present. Mr. Stevens has five children and two grandchildren all of them prsent. A number of relatives and friends besides the immediate family were there. No one thought to count the people but after some had left the estimated number was more than a hundred present. At the lunch hour a long table was filled in the shady grove. Rations of all kinds were piled on it with plenty of ice tea and lemonade for everybody. As people would leave an invitation was given to come back one year hence. Mr. and Mrs. Stevens make anybody enjoy a visit to their home any time of the year. They are christian people and are highly esteemed by all their neighbors. We wish for them many more happy reunions. __________ Vern and Mrs. Ham of south Georgia, visited their parents, B.R> and Mrs. Ham, Sunday. _______ Gordie and Mrs. Hanson, Hogansville, visited Rufus McWhorter and family last week. _________ Miss Barnelia Howard of Roopville, spent last week with Miss Hazel Houston. ___________ Jesse and Mrs. Turner of Roanoke, Ala, were the guests of Grady Farr and family last weekend. __________ A marriage of interest to her many friends is that of Miss Claire Jackson to a Mr. Mathews the second Sunday in August. Mrs. Mathews is the oldeset daughter of B.R. and Mrs. Jackson. ____________ Miss Clyde Jackson who has been in New York the past two months, is expected to arrive home next Saturday. _____ Sam and Mrs. Gibb, Atlanta, visited the latter's parents, J.H. and Mrs. Jackson, last weekend. _______ Mrs. Al Adams with her little son of Atlanta, are visiting her mother, Mrs. Laura Hardy. _______ Miss Connie Eley leaves this week to teach school at Sand Hill. __________ ISSUE of September 1, 1939 of "News and Banner", Franklin, Heard County, Georgia MT. PLEASANT News B.J. Parker left Wednesday for Macon where he will spend some time with his daughter, Mrs. Ed Phillips. _____ Miss Pauline Combs has been in Atlanta at the Wesley Memorial Hospital for about a week being treated before an operation. ________ Sandy Nelms and family of Louisville, Ky., spent last week with his mother and other relatives. ________ Mrs. Lena H. Cox and son T.J., returned home Tuesday from Altanta, where T.J. had a job of painting. ________ The farmers are very blue in our ville, corn so sorry and the boll weevil eating up the cotton. _______ Miss Ethel Lee Kitchens, who is working in Atlanta, spent Sunday with homefolks. ________ Mrs. W.B. Davis was called to LaGrange Tuesday. One of her little nephews has meningitis. _______ We are sorry to say, Dorothy, 13 year old daughter of Jesse and Mrs. Arnett, is at the hospital at Warm Springs, where she is being treated for infantile paralysis. ________ STATELINE News Miss Jonella MIddlebrooks is spending a few days with Mrs. Emitt Yarbough of LaGrange. __________ James Willard O'Neal spent the week with his grandparents, Joe an Mrs. Lindsey of Buffalo, Ala. ___________ Misses Ostein and Lucrete O'Neal spent several days with her grandparents, A.J. and Mrs. Adathon ?? of ??. ________ We are sorry to hear of Grandpa Hunter being in the hospital on account of bronchial trouble. ______ LEGAL NOTICE, ADMINISTRATION To Whom it May concern: J.A.
