GA Miscellaneous Newspaper Notices from the "News and Banner", Franklin, Heard County, Georgia Newspaper Issue of Friday, March 24, 1939 John Pike, 65, well known citizen of Five Points, committed suicide at his home early Thursday morning, shooting himself through the chest with a shotgun. He had been ailing it is said, both physically and mentally for some time. He is survived by four children, having lost his wife some year or more ago. _______ Georgia motorists will have to pay $1 instead of 50 cents a year for their licenses beginning in July. _______ Mrs. W.B. Martin, a widow of the late Judge Martin, died Sunday at her home in LaGrange after a brief illness. She was the former Eunice Davis of Coweta County. Surviving are a son Raymond W. Martin, att orney and former member of the Huse of Representatives from Troup County; three daughters, Mrs. James C. Davis wife of Judge Davis of the Stone Mountain circuit court; Lena Martin of Milledgeville, a mamber of the faculty of the G.S.C.W; Tommie Martin of the LaGrange High School faculty; a sister, Mrs. R.H. Ware and two brothers, J.J. and J.A. Davis. ________ A six-legged mule was recently born to a mare belonging to W.C Smith, who lives near Temple. ______ Walter Eason of Bowdon has a unique hobby. It is builidng airplanes, wagons, dolls, shops and so forth, inside of burned out electric light bulbs. ________ COOLEY's STORE Community News The farmers surely are making good use of the spring weather. ______ Bradley and Mrs. Barber of Lagrange, were the Sunday guests of E.O. Barber and family. _____ J.B. Cooley and family of LaGrange, spent Sunday with Leonard McClain and family. ______ Newt and Mrs. Kirk spent Sunday with Jesse Arnett and family. _____ Mrs. Ed Wilson who has been spending quite a while with Mr. and Mrs. Lee near Roanoke, Ala., returned home last week. ________ Mrs. Anna McClain spent one day last week with Mrs. Leonard McClain. ______ Mrs. G.P. WIngo and children, also Lurlene Clark of near Hogansville, spent Sunday with C.A. Caswell and family. ______ TEXAS Community News Granny Kitchens has returned to the home of L.L. Cook from a month's visit with her daughter Mrs. Lizzie Jones of Roanoke, Ala. _________ Miss Louise Cooper is home for awhile from West Georgia College. ________ Kaylor and Mrs. Cooley of LaGrange were the Sunday guests of E.J. and Mrs. Mulkey. ______ Mrs. J.C. Cook and family visited among friends and relatives in Hogansville Sunday. _____ MT. PLEASANT News The many friends of Mrs. Lucy Davis Meriwether Hopkins will be sorry to know she is in West Point Hospital in a very serious condition. ______ Mack and Mrs. Cox of Waveryl Hall spent the week with Olin Mathews and family. ______ S.W. and Mrs. Jones of Atlanta spent Saturday night and Sunday with his father J.A. Jones. _____ B.J. Parker Sr. who has been with us for about one year is visiting his daughter Mrs. Ed Philips of Macon. _______ Henry Scott of LaGrange was buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery Saturday last by a large crowd of friends and relatives. He leaves a wife and seven children to mourn his passing. ________ John Davis Arrington and Miss Mary Lou Kitchens were happily married Tuesday night last over in Alabama and are making their home with his father Hoyt Arrington of near Waresville. _________ Elton Middlebrooks and family of Waresville spent Sunday with his parents, I.E. and Mrs. Middlebrooks. ________ Miss Vera Combs returned home Sunday after spending the week with her sister Mrs. Albert Bledsoe, in LaGrange. _________ Our good friend and neighbor Mrs. Lena Cox and son T.J., who spent the winter in Florida, returned home Saturday to spend a few days. ______ Mrs. Suzie Boggus spent last week in Atlanta with her children, returning home Sunday last. _______ FRANKLIN Home News, Gossip Misses Joyce and Louise Mickle, GSCW, were at home for spring holidays. ____ Mr. Wright Lipford, Emory University, was at home for the spring holiday weekend, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Shebbourne, all guests of Mr. W.D. Lipford. ______ Miss Dorothy Lipham, Columbus, Mr. Thomas Lipham, spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. T.A. Lipham at their country home near Simpson. ____ Mr. Thomas Lipford, Emory Universtity, Miss Camille Lipford, GSCW st udent, spent the spring hilidays with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. T.H. Lipford. ________ Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Hayes, Atlanta, Mrs. Hudson East, St. Charles, LA.; were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Daniel and Mrs. J.D. Lipford who entertained in their honor Saturday afternoon at a lovely tea. _______ Ed Watts has returned from Wesley Memorial Hospital where he underwent a minor operation on his chin. _____ Mr. W.H. Miller and family spent Sunday in Union City with Mr. and Mrs. Fred Williams. ________ Miss Willie Heard, Atlanta, Mr. and Mrs. James Harden, Toccoa, spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. S.R. Heard. ________ Mrs. W.E. Denney was called to Atlanta this week on account of the illness and death of Mrs. J.W. Neal, the mother-in-law of her niece, Mrs. Dester Barker Neal. _________ Mr. and Mrs. J.G. Ray of Atlanta, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Whatley of LaGrange, were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Arrington and Mr. and Mrs. Kramer Denney. __________ Miss Effie Folds, our correspondent at Simpson, recently underwent a successful ooperation for appendicitis. _______ Mrs. F.M. Dennis, Jacksonville, Fla., is visiting her parents Mr. and Mrs. T.E. Owensby. ________ GLENN Community News Ross Lane of Shawmut, Ala, was in our midst Monday. ______ Kiser O'Neal has purchased a pair of fine mules. _____ Newt Williams, Jim and Burk Whitley were in Carrollton MOnday. They brought back the good news that work would begin immediately on the rural electric line which will extend to Glenn community. _______ Margret Williams, Virginia Purgason and Ernestine Adams are at home for the spring holidays. ____ Mrs. James Crockett is quite sick at this time. ____ Mrs. G.G. Daniel, Whitley and Mrs. Barrett were visitors in our community Sunday. Whitley isn't with Sterch Furniture Co of Atlanta any longer but has joined Daniel and Caudle Construction Co. at Hogansville where he will be a partner in this firm. _____ Mrs. Ida Williams returned from Columbus Sunday where she visited her son Jesse for a week. ______ Mrs. A.P. Gross spent Sunday in Hogansville visiting her sister Mrs. L.J. Arrington attended the funeral of Herman Knight Sunday in LaGrange. _______ Miss Evelyn Sheets spent the weekend with Miss Jewel Lesley. _______ Roy and Mrs. Howell of LaGrange spent the weekend with relatives here. ______ NEWSPAPER ISSUE of March 31, 1939 GRAND JURY PRESENTMENTS, HEARD SUPERIOR COURT, MARCH TERM, 1939 We have had under investigation the killing of James Mapp by Ike Teal. We have been unable to secure the testimony of John Spradlin, who was an eye witness and whose affidavit as to the details of the killing has been examined by us and makes out a case of deliberate murder. This witness, John Spradlin, has suddenly left this county and cannot at present be located. We believe he is deliberately seeking to avoid giving testimony to this court. We therefore respectfully ask the court to extend to this Grand Jury additional time to consider this case and to secure the presence of this witness and we ask that we be held subject to call until this witness can be produced. We further ask that this witness, John Spradlin, be placed under bond for his appearance before this court in the event he can be located; and that the said Ike Teal be retained in jail without bond throughout the time in which this Grand Jury could be legally reassembed to pass upon this case. _________ STATELINE Community News Ray and Mrs. Brumbeloe, Willie and Mrs. Ward of Roanoke, Ala., were the guests of R.W. and Mrs. O'Neal Thursday night. ________ We are sorry to report that little Billy Joe O'Neal has been ill for the past week. ______ We are sorry to report that Rev. Rev. Alvin Gore is ill with flu. _______ Warren Witcher of Rabun Gap is spending a few days with homefolks. _____ J.R. and Mrs. Buchanan with Mrs. L.J. Forbus, spent Friday with E. and Mrs. Barber near Mt. Pleasant. _______ J.G. Cheney, vice president of Mandeville Mills at Carrollton, suffered a painful foot injury in a recent fall. _____ HOME NEWS, GOSSIP Mrs. W.B. Wharton of Shawmut, Ala., is spending the weekend with her sister, Mrs. V.O. Smith. ______ A new telephone line is being built from Carrollton to Centralhatchee, and will include a dial system exchange at Roopville from which Centralhatchee will be served. It is expected also that the line will untimately be extended to Franklin, connecting other homes en route. _______ Congressman E.M. Owen, has been in Emergency Hospital, in Washington, several days suffering with bronchial pneumonia but is responding to treatment fine and improving daily. His hots of Heard County friends will delight to know of the able congressman's convalescence. _______ Mr. A.J. Lane's two lovely new residences have been completed, the grounds to be graded being all now to be finished. Mr. and Mrs. Guy Atkininson this week moved into the building next to Dr. Taylor's and Mr. Lane will move into his new brick veneer next day or so, when Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Awbrey will occupy the former residence of Mr. Lane between the two houses. ______ Mr. Winston M. Hardy, 60, prominent farmer of Meriwether County died early Sunday morning after an emergency operation at LaGrange. He was buried MOnday at Durand and a largely attended and impressive funeral service conducted by his pastor, Rev. Wm. Greenway, assisted by his former pastor, Rev. C.F. Hughes and Presiding Elder J.W. Veatch. Mr. Hardy was a brother of Mrs. P.T. McCutchen and besides his wife, a daughter and three sons, is survived by another brother, Col. A.H. Hardy of Hamilton. _______ MIss Nina Daniel is at home for the summer from Marietta, where she has been teaching. ______ John Spradlin, material witness in case of Ike Teal, charged with the murder of Mapp, was located in southeast Alabama and brought to jail Tuesday.
