Eley and family of LaGrange, visited the former's mother, Mrs. Dollie Eley, Sunday. ____ The Jackson reunion at H.N. Prince's Sunday last was greatly enjoyed. A nice dinner was served. ______ Miss Clyde Jackson is spending a few days with homefolks. She leaves June 15th for New York to teach athletics in camps. ____ TEXAS Community News The homecoming services at Prospect were enjoyed by a large crowd. The afternoon was spent singing. _____ Mrs. Lewis Golden and Mrs. E.J. Mulkey and Bonzell were visitors in Hogansville Monday. ____ Mrs. J.B. Mulkey of LaGrange has been visiting her son E.J. for the past week. _______ Miss Thelma Drummond is visiting her sister, Mrs. Fred Gore, at Ridgeway. _______ Austin Davis and Miss Virginia Turner were united in marriage Sunday. Adams, Mr. Alonza Adams and Mrs. Stanton Adams spent Sunday in Barnesville with Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Bonner. ______ Mrs. Nancy Johnson, 74, beloved lady of Simpson, died Tuesday and was buried Thursday at Goshen, after services by Revs. Henderson and Hyatt. She is survived by four children: Will Johnson, Anniston, Ala., Russell Johnson, Mrs. P.B. Shoemake, Franklin; Mrs. Joe Shoemake, Carroll County. Lewis & Lipford, Franklin morticians, directed the funeral. _______ Nurse Wanted - - healthy, settled woman, white or black, between ages 20 to 50 to care for a very old woman and do light house work. Mrs. Brittain is an Aunt of Mr. Adams and had not been amid the old home scenes for many years. _______ Mrs. Heard Thompson has returned from a week's visit to LaGrange. ______ The many friends of Mrs. T.S. Cosby will regret to learn that she is exceedingly feeble. _____ Miss Pegg Huff of Bowman, was the recent guest of Miss Grace Thompson. ____ Vocational Teacher V.O. Smith is attending Camp Jackson on the Ocmulgee this week. Mrs. Smith is spending the week with her sister, Mrs. D.A. Few, at Appalachee. ________ Typhoid Clinic - - A clinic by state board of health to immunize from typhoid fever will be held at Centralhatchee school house today 1 to 4 p.m., Franklin Court House Tuesday June 13, 8 a.m. to 12. a.m. ______ Our good gardner friend, Laz Pritchett of Waresville, sent us this week the finest cabbage head we have seen this spring. Stripped of stalk and all lower leaves the hard head weighed an even seven pounds and tender as lettuce. ________ W.P. Arnold, 62, died at his home in Hogansville last Friday, June 6th after an extended illness. He is survived by his wife the former Miss Ruth Miller of Corinth; three sons, W.P. Jr., Harvey and Charles; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Ocheltree of Winnsboro, N.C., and Miss Frances Arnold of Hogansville. Mrs. Lizzie Pringle and Miss Lucile Arnold of Newnan are his sisters. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at Corinth Methodist Church of which Mr. Arnold was a faithful member. The Rev. Paul Gunnells, a former pastor and Rev. Mr. Bray conducted the impressive service in the presence of a large congregation of friends and relatives. Heartfelt tribute was fittingly paid this splendid man. Seldom if ever have there been more beautiful flowers at any funeral at this place. Burial in Corinth Cemetery. _______ MRS. FREDONIA SPRADLIN MCDOWELL - - - Funeral services for Mrs. McDowell were held in Atlanta Sunday after which the body was brought to Corinth for burial in the family lot. Mrs. McDowell was the former Miss Fredonia Spradlin, was born and reared in the Corinth community. She was a member of one of the pioneer famlies, and leaves a number of relatives to mourn her passing. _______ NO SPECIAL COURT FOR TEAL TRIAL WILL BE HELD - - - Judge Lee B. Wyatt was in Franklin Friday to confer with Commissioner Almon and other officials relative to proposed special term of court to try the Teal murder case passed up at the March term on account of an absent witness. It is less than three months now until the regular term of superior court and viewing the backward conditions on the farms and the necessity of using every day possible in crops, coupled with the extra expense of an adjourned session of court, it was the opinion of the Judge and of all other officials that it would be better to let the trial go over to the regular September term instead of calling jurors from their pressing work at this time and the Judge so decided. ________ GLENN Community News Copeland Askew of Tulsa, Okla., and sisters, Cora and Dixie of Atlanta were welcome visitors in our ville Tuesday. ________ Mrs. Ida Williams is at home after a two week visit with her daughter Mrs. L.J. Green, of Hogansville. _______ B.T. Adams of Rome, was mingling with friends here Monday and Tuesday. _____ Mrs. Rubye Whitley entertained at the miscellaneous shower Tuesday afternoon in honor of Mrs. Oretha Freeman, a recent bride. The home was decorated with spring flowers. The guests were invited into the living room where Misses Virginia Whitley and Helen Wilson served iced punch, after which they were ushered to the dining room and served delicious cream and cake. The table's center decoration was a miniature bride and groom with tapers leading to candles which lighted the dining room. Margaret Jackson kept the bride's book. Many beautiful and useful gifts were received. ______ Mr. and Mrs. L.C. Ridley and family spent Sunday with relatives in Heflin, Ala. _____ Miss Johnnie Daniel of Atlanta, spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Daniel. ____ Mrs. Marie Upchurch and children of East Point, spent several days this week with Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Lane. ____ Mr. and Mrs. Walace Bonner and son of Barnesville are spending awhile with Mr. and Mrs. G.A. Adams. ____ Mrs. Mary Ellis, Mrs. Herbert Beadle and Elizabeth Beadle have returned to their home in Atlanta after a visit to Mr. and Mrs. Q.C. Daniel. _____ Mrs. Nellie Lane of Miami, is spending a while with her daughter Mrs. H.J. Mickle. ____ Mrs. T.W. Goodson is in Atlanta for special treatment while Mr. W.T. Goodson is improving from severe tooth trouble. ______ Mrs. Lewis Tompkins has gone to Akron, Ohio to spend the summer. ______ The friends of Mrs. J.W. Daniel will regret to learn that she is ill at her home in Newnan. ______ Mr. and Mrs. Tom Goodson and family spent Sunday in Rock Mills, Ala., with Mr. and Mrs. Jim Farr. ______ Mr. H.S. Johns of Birmingham, Ala., is at Burdett's to spend the summer among his old Franklin friends. ______ Mrs. Vernon Burdett and children of Thomasville are spending the week with Mr. and Mrs. H.E. Burdett and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Simonton. _______ Adam Dunson, colored, was struck by a car driven by Otis Vaughan of Arnco, on highway one near Tompkins Mill Saturday night. Dunson was knocked from his wagon which was wrecked but he and his horse were only slightly bruised. Vaughan was said to be quite groggy and endeavored to escape into a creek when officers arrived, but was brought to jail and made settlement later. ________ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday June 23, 1929 GLENN Community News Mrs. J.F. Morris of Carrollton, Miss Eleanor MOrris and Shep Lewis of Atlanta were visitors here for the weekend. _______ Miss Eunice O'Neal, who finished a business course at LaGrange, has accepted a position with the Credit Finance Corporation of that city. ______ Mr. and Mrs. Newt Williams' Sunday guests were Mr. and Mrs. Jim Smith of Carrollton and Mr. and Mrs. Burk Whitley. Burk Whitley and son Robert, mase a business trip to Atlanta Saturday. _____ Mrs. Robert Stone of Atlanta who has been visiting her father Ed Wilson, ws called to Newnan Wednesday to her brother James Wilson, who has appendicitis. ______ Much grain was lost in this section during the recent rainy weather. _____ STATE LINE Community News Theo O'Neal of Atlanta spent the weekend with his parents J.H. and Mrs. O'Neal. _____ Mrs. Davis McClain is on the sick list. ___ Miss Eunice O'Neal of LaGrange, spent the weekend with her parents, Kiser and Mrs. O'Neal. ___ Carey Yarbrough and his mother Mrs. Dora Yarbrough, recently spent a few days in Rock Mills, Ala., with relatives. Carey Yarbrough is on the sick list. _______ Mrs. Annie Mae Mooney spent Saturday with her sister, Mrs. Clyde Hunter. ______ Olin O'Neal and family spent Friday night with A.J. and Mrs. Adamson of Glenn. ______ Mrs. Mary Ann Gross and Willie Ray of LaGrange spent Sunday with J.T. and Mrs. Middlebrooks, attending services at Union Grove. We were happy to have them with us. ______ Emmett and Mrs. Yarbrough of LaGrange spent Sunday with relatives here. ____ Joe and Mrs. Lindsey of Buffalo, ALa, were the Sunday guests of R.K. and Mrs. O'Neal. ______ Frederick Hunter of Roanoke, Ala, spent the weekend with his parents, Henry and Mrs. Hunter. ______ John Wiley Dennis of LaGrange, spent th weekend with relatives here. _____ Death of Dave Cook, 51, of Whitesburg, at Carrollton Monday marred a perfect week and record for Georgia's highway safety boosters who earlier in the day reported not one fatality had been recorded as a result of a motor vehicle mishap. ________ ELERY Community News Mrs. Glema Forbus is still improving after an operation for appendicitis. _______ Clarence and Mrs. Wright announce the birth of a son. _____ J.R. Buchanan is attending the soldiers convention in Atlanta this week. ______ E.O. and Mrs. Barber of Mt. Pleasant, visited their daughter Mrs. Glema Forbus on Sunday. _______ We are glad to report little Morris Wright slowly improving after suffering with infection of the bone. ______ J.D. and Mrs. Neighbors and Troy Powers of Columbus, spent the weekend with E.R. Bledsoe. _____ Leonard and Mrs. Marshall and Glenn and Mrs. Marshall spent Sunday in Atlanta. ______ Miss Essie Mae Strickland spent the weekend with Miss Winnell Bell near Tyus. ____ HOME NEWS, SUGGESTIONS and GOSSIP Miss Christine Davis is in LaGrange Hospital where she underwent an appendectomy a few days ago. ______ Mr. and Mrs. Dent Goodson and their two little sons, Billie and Dannie from Tampa, Fla., are spending a while with the former's mother, Mrs. Eva Goodson. ____ Mr. and Mrs. B.F. Cagle, Tom and Mrs. Gladney and family and Mrs. R.L. Gladney spent the weekend in Ragland, Ala., to attend the 84th birthday reunion of the family of Mr. B.N. Archer, former Heard Countian. _____ Lightening struck a post at the west Franklin cross roads store Saturday afternoon, tearing up light fixtures, an electic victrola and otherwise mussing up the place. Several people felt the shock but nobody was hurt. The place is ooperated by Whitaker Lane. _______ Miss Myrtle Jackson is in Atlanta as a guest of her cousin, Miss Alice Haskin. ______ River fisherman have had wonderful luck this past week. ______ A congenial Franklin party will leave Sunday for New York and the World's Fair. In the party will be: Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Daniel, Miss Virginia Paschal, Mrs. V. O. Smith, Mrs. Frank Gearreld. They will be joined by Miss Helen Hines of Hogansville. _______ Mrs. Bud Arrington from the northern part of the county was brought to the county jail Wednesday in a serious mental condition. At the age of 43 she is said to be the mother of 24 children, among them four sets of twins, and 18 of them living. ______ Mrs. Hope H. Lane spent last week with relatives in LaGrange. ______ Mrs. M.T. Awbrey spent Tuesday in Atlanta with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Maddox. ______ Mr. and Mrs. Fred Williams and little son of Union City, spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Miller. _______ Mr. Charlie Lipham has returned from a visit into Texas, extending his tour into old Mexico. ________ Mrs. Stanton Adams has returned from a visit to her parents in Roanoke, Ala. _______ Mrs. Lena H. Cox, Atlanta, is at her cottage at Umarest for the remainder of June. Her hosts of Heard County friends are always glad to have her among them. She is offering her lovely Heard County estate for Sale. _________ Numbers of Heard County Legionaires attended the State convention this week in Atlanta. Those from Franklin were: Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Daniel, W.C. Hill, Clifford Lee, Herman Bell, J.D. Cox, Camp Umarest, Franklin, GA. ______ Miss Minnie Ann Kent gave a lovely birthday party Friday last for her cousin Miss Bettie Bonner of Carrollton. _____ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, June 30, 1939 TEXAS Community News Mrs. Morgan Drummond and children of Shawnut, Ala., visited Mose and Mrs. Drummond a while Sunday. ______ Mrs. Lewis Golden attended the Barber and Golden reunion at Wards Mill near Five Points, Ala., last Saturday. _________ Dr. Mickle has been sick for several days. _____ Grady and Mrs. O'Neal of Shawmut, Ala., visited Luther and Mrs. O'Neal Sunday. _____ HEARN - GOODSON Characterized by charming simplicity, the wedding of Miss Leila Haley Hearn and Melson Goodson of Franklin was solemnized Thursday afternoon at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.R. Hearn, on South Greenwood Street, LaGrange, in the presence of a group of relatives and friends. Reverand M.M. Maxwell, pastor of the First Methodist church, gave the wedding vows in front of an alter improvised of palms and ferns and placed in the living room. Two cathedral candelabra holding white tapers were placed amid the greens and at either end of the alter were placed tall floor baskets holding white gladioli. Bowls and baskets of white gladioli were used to decorate the consoles and tables in the living room and dining room. As the candles were lighted at the alter by Miss Ernestine Hearn, sister of the bride, and Miss Augusta Wynne of Ashland, Ala., a cousin, Miss Jeannette Wilhoit, pianist, played "At Dawning." Preceeding the ceremony, Mrs. W.C. Key of Atlanta sang "Ich Liebe Dich" by Grieg and "Sweet Mystery of Life" with piano accompaniments played by Miss Wilhoit who also played the wedding march from the opera "Lohengrin" for the entrance of the bride and bridegroom who came to the alter together. During the ceremony Miss Wilhoit played softly MacDowell's "To a Wild Rose". The bride's brunette beauty was enhanced by a modish two piece ensemble of navy blue sheer fashoined with a smocked coat in Regingote sytle. She wore a becoming hat of navy staw and ribbon finished with a short veil and accessories of navy. Her corsage was of Briarcliff roses and lilies of the valley. Following the ceremony, Mr. and Mrs. Hearn entertained at an informal reception, assisted by Mrs. Roy Ward of Atlanta, Mrs. Ralph Rollins of Greenville, Miss Chrstine Nall of Grantville, Miss Barlice Saltsman, Miss Bernice Freeman, Miss Ernestine Hearn and Miss Augusta Wynne of Ashland, Ala. The bride's cake, of frozen cream, three-tierred and decorated with pink roses and lilies of the valley, was topped with a miniature bride and bridegroom. Placed on a small table which was overlaid with a venetian cutwork cloth, the cake was cut by the members of the bridal party and the wedding guests. Individual cakes, decorated with bride's roses, and ice cream molded as wedding bells were served during the reception hours. _______ WARESVILLE Community News A large crowd gave Sam Arnett a birthday dinner Sunday. Hisson Grady and wife from Montgomery, Ala, came up, also James and Mrs. Slag from Columbus. ___ Ledford Cook is improving at home arger a serious operation. ______ Mrs. Jesse O'Neal is in LaGrange with her daughter Mrs. Lonnie McCollough, who has a little girl named Willie Lou. _____ Joan Netles who has been spending awhile with her aunt Mrs. Taylor, returned to Thomasville Sunday. _____ Mrs. John McCollough is slowly improving. ____ Mary Drummond has been sick but is better. ____ Elton and Mrs. Middlebrooks are building a new home. _____ Jesse O'Neal was seriously sick last week but is better. _______ Roberta Bartlett has been spending a few days with her grandmother, Mrs. Kitchens. _____ Sarah Kitchens has been sick but is better. _____ Sorry to hear of the serious illness of Rev. W.H. Henry, who is in hospital in LaFayette, Ala. ____ HOME NEWS, SUGGESTIONS, GOSSIP Misses Josephine Kinman and Edna Perry and Mr. Stephen McCutchen spent Sunday in Warm Springs. ______ Miss Judie Phillips is spending this week with relatives in Cuthbert. _____ Mr. Solon Owensby and Miss Mary Jean Owensby left yesterday for Jacksonville, Fla., to spend a few days with Mr. and Mrs. F.M. Dennis and enjoy a dip in the old ocean. _______ Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Williams, Dorothy and Taylor Williams of Union City, Mr. and Mrs. Grady Williams of Red Oak, were recent visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Goodson. ______ Mr. and Mrs. Paul Jackson, of Seattle, Washington, formerly of Heard County, announce the birth of a daughter on June 19th. She has been given the name Shirley Trene. _______ Misses Mary Hooper and Dorothy Daniel, of Cedartown, spent the weekend with Miss Grace Daniel. _____ Mr. Humphrey Daniel sent us the first open cotton bloom Tuesday a.m. June 27th. Mr. W.J. Arnett brought one Wednesday. _________ Mr. C.A. Adamson, Roger, Tex., Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Brown, Waco, Tex., Mrs. Lula McDowell, Akron, Ohio, Mrs. M.G. Wood, Miami, Fla., were recent visitors of Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Arrington and Mr. and Mrs. Kramer Denney. ______ Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Lancaster and Mr. and Mrs. Leon Tarpley of Villa RIca, were in the city the past week to visit and Mr. and Mrs. Lancaster expect to move back to Franklin and go into the mercantile business early in August. _______ The largest turnip we have seen this season was sent us a fw days ago by Mr. W.Z. Noles of Frolona. It tipped the scales at six and a half pounds fully stripped. ______ Mr. Wilson Awbrey spent last week at Hill City, GA, among relatives and friends. Miss Sybil Redwine returned with him to spend a while. ______ Mr. J.W. Ray of LaGrange, attended services at the Baptist church Sunday and spent the day with his sister, Mrs. J.J. Arrington. For many years he was music director at this church. _____ Camp Meeting Notice - - The trustees and all interested in the August Flatrock Campmeeting are requested to meet at the tabernacle at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 8th to let concessions, assign tents and otherwise arrange for the meeting. R.P. Davis, Chairman. _______ Mrs. D.L. Johnson with her two children of Cairo, is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.J. Noles. _____ PENNY - DENNIS Mr. and Mrs. Madison Penny announce the marriage of their daughter, Hazel, to John Emory Dennis. The marriage was solenmized March 23 at Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The bride is the second daughter of her parents, a native Georgian, but has made her home in Miami, Fla., for the past few years. She received her education at Habira High School and at Miami University. John Emory is the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. H.G. Dennis Sr. of Franklin, GA. He received his education at Franklin High School. He worked for the state highways in this county for several years but is now connected with Graham's Dairy at Miami, where they are making their home.
