Georgia for Sept 1st through Sept 29, 1939 HOME NEWS, GOSSIP Miss Inez Lipford left this week for Gainesville where she will teach again this fall. ___ Mr .and Mrs. A.J. Lane have been spending a vacation at Florida beaches. ____ Mr. and Mrs. Brown Lancaster of Greenville, spent several days this week with Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Lancaster. ____ Mr. J.N. Mitchell and Miss Ida Lee Horn were joined in wedlock Sunday near Harmoney, Rev. J.C. Adams officiating. They will reside in Omaha, Ala. _____ Mr. M.T. Awbrey is in No. 48 Hospital, Atlanta, for a tonsil operation and other observation. ____ Mr. and Mrs. Goss Johnson Whitaker announce the engagement of their daughter, Mary Ware, to Melvin Kelly of Atlanta, the marriage to occur in the early fall. The popularity of the bride-to-be makes the announcement one of much interest to Franklin and Hogansville friends. ___ Mrs. Nelle Lane, who has been in Ragland, Ala., for some time, returned this week. She was accompanied by Mrs. H.C. Brannon and little daughter Judy, who is also visiting Mrs. H.J. Mickle. ____ Mrs. Alice Whataker Santa Cruz, and little son Bruce, of Tampa Fla., is visting Mr. and Mrs. G.J. Whitaker. Later in the week, Mrs. M.B. Whitaker and Mr. D.B. Whitaker Jr., who are in the mountains, will arrive to spend a few days. ____ Miss Virginia McCutchen returned this week from Alabama and Mississippi, and will leave within a few days for Atlanta to resume her teaching in the Lena H. Cox School. ____ Mr. Joe Loftin, of Fort Worth, Tex., accompanied by his sister, Mrs. B.A. Hogan, of Hogansville, were recent visitors of Mrs. Lena H. Cox at her cottag, U-Ma-Rest. ___ Miss Vina Mae Harris of Altus, Okla., and Mr. Leon J. Cox, of Savannah, GA, enjoyed a few days at Camp U-Ma-Rest recently. ____ Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Burdett and daughter of Atlanta, spent the week end with Mrs. H.E. Burdett and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Simonton. ____ Mr. and Mrs. Talmadge Combs, Ninatare, Nebr., with mr. and Mrs. Harvey Combs, of Calhoun, GA, were visitors the past week of their father, Mr. R.A. Combs, of Frolona, and all spent a day in Franklin with Mr. and Mrs. Guy Atkinson. Mr. Talmadge Combs has held an important place with the Great Western Sugar Refining Co. of Nebraska for the past 17 years, and Mr. Harvey Combs is a leading funeral director in Calhoun, and whose lovely place the editor had the pleasure to visit during the press convention at Calhoun. ____ Mrs. J.K. Brown, of Newnan Springs, has been assisting her father, Rev. J.C. Adams, in services at Wesley Chapel, returning home this week. _____ Miss Birdie Sanders, Newnan and Miss Fannie Wortham, Atlanta, spent the weekend with Dr. and Mrs. Wortham, of Centralhatchee, also visiting Franklin. ____ Mr. and Mrs. Howard Miller, Atlanta, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Williams, Union City, spent weekend with Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Miller. ____ Mr. and Mrs. Ben Young of Fort Smith, Ark., accompanied by their daughter Frances, and granddaughter Bettie, are visting the Messrs. Davis near Flat Rock. Mrs. Young was Miss Dolly Davis, daughter of T.J. Davis, brother of the late J.G. Davis and was formerly a Heard countian. _____ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, September 15, 1939 C.O. ASKEW KILLED SUNDAY IN WRECK NEAR WAYCROSS C.O. Askew, 74, reared at Franklin, but for many years a citizen of Atlanta, was fatally injured in an auto wreck collision near Waycross Sunday last, and never gained consciousness, dying a few hours later. With Mr. Askew were several friends, all more or less hurt. The accident is said to have occurred when a drunken truck driver ran into them after their getting almost entirely out of the road. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon in Atlanta. Messrs. A.J.Lane and A.J. Daniel, nephews of Mrs. Askew, who was formerly Miss Ada Daniel, attended the funeral. ____ OLIVE BRANCH Community News We are sorry to hear that Humphrey Daniel is worse. ____ Mrs. Lynn Brazeal has been real sick but glad to say is better. ____ Miss Lucile Johnson is visiting her sister, Mrs. Bill Jackson, this week in Bowdon. ____ P.N. McWaters had as their guests Sunday, J.E. and Mrs. McWaters and Mr. and Mrs. Oglesby, all of Newnan. ___ J.A. and Mrs. Brazeal are the proud parents of a baby girl, who bears the name of Catherine Frances. ___ Hugh and Mrs. Johnson and little son, Hugh Jr., of Carrollton, were visiting homefolks Sunday. ___ The stork shower given by Mrs. Roy Johnson for Mrs. Bradley Johnson Sept 9th was enjoyed by a large crowd. Refreshments served were ice cream, cake and tea and at the hour of 2 o'clock set for the shower the little daughter arrived in time to receive her presents, a lot of useful things for the litte lady who hasn't yet been given a name. ________ BRUSHY CREEK Community News Sam Toney and daughter Agnes, spent last week in Manchester with relatives. ____ S.J. Toney and family had as their Sunday guests, J.C. Toney and family of State Line. ___ TEXAS Community News E.J. and Mrs. Mulkey and children visited W.G. Gay at Armstrong Mill recently. ___ Thelma Drummond spent a few days last week with her sister, Mrs. Fred Gore, at Ridgeway. ____ Gorden and Mrs. Cook of Fairfax, Ala., spent Saturday night with their parents, L.L. and Mrs. Cook. ___ Mrs. Lewis Golden spent Sunday with her sister, Mrs. Clifford Baker, at Langdale, Ala. Their mother is ill at the Langdale Hospital. ____ Edna Brannon of LaGrange, spent last week with her grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. C.M. Mickle. ____ Mrs. Mose Drummond is with her father, who is ill at his home near Liberty Hill. ___ W.H. and Mrs. Golden, Woodrow and Minnie Golden, of White Plains, Ala., visited Lewis Golden Sunday. ____ J.T. Simonton spent the weekend in Ashville, N.C. ___ Mr. and Mrs. R.I. Awbrey and Jack Awbrey spent Sunday in Roanoke, Ala, with Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Awbrey. ___ Miss Elizabeth Davis of Centralhatchee, spent the week with Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Tompkins. ___ Court convenes Monday. There is a light docket and it is expected that the civil division will last not more following the new jury and Judge J.C. Davis presiding, swapping benches with Judge Wyatt. ___ Mr. and Mrs. F.T. Wilson, publishers of the Villa Rican, Mr. S.C. Connally and Miss Martha Wood, all of Villa Rica, spent awhile Tuesday with Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Lancaster and the News and Banner. They were enroute to LaGrange where Mr. and Mrs. Wilson entered their daughter Martha in college. ___ Mr. and Mrs. L.E. Denney of Atlanta, spent several days last week among county relatives. ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, September 22, 1939 BARN BURNS NEAR TOWN PROPERTY OF S.A. NAPIER S.A. Napier, prominent farmer near Five Points on the highway toward LaGrange, was destroyed by fire of undetermined origin about one o'clock Sunday night. When discovered, the roof was already falling in and nothing could be saved. The barn contained much hay and other farm products, two mules and a pick up truck, all lost without insurance. ____ HOME NEWS, GOSSIP For Sale - - 5 purebred big bone Poland China boar pigs $5.00 each, 75 cents more if registered. Cox, Camp U-Ma-Rest, Franklin, GA. ___ Dave Hindsman, 87, respectable negro, died at his home near town the past week. He was one of the rapidly disappearing old slaves and held the esteem of all white people. ______ Miss Mary Whitaker, whose marriage to Mr. Melvyn Kelly will be an event of September 21, was the honor guest of the bridge party which Mrs. V.O. Smith gave Saturday afternoon. Beautiful fall flowers of blue, gold and bronze predominated in the decorative motif in the living room. Guests were Misses Mary Whitaker, Ina Twedell, Martha Bartlett, Julia Freeman, Jaenette Taylor, Virginia Paschal, Louise Lipford, Mesdames Edwin Cauthen, Frank Gearreld, A.J. Lane, Wallace Bonner, C.K, Buroughs, A. Daniel, Stanton Adams, Melson Goodson, Carl Simonton, G.A. Adams and G.J. Whitaker. ____ Mr. Herschell Daniel of Cadiz, Ohio is spending a few days with his father, Mr. H.D. Daniel, who has been confined to his home by illness for several weeks. ___ CORINTH Community News Mrs. E.A. Mitchell and Mrs. A.S. Callaway entertained at the home of the latter at a kitchen shower in honor of Mrs. Sallie Miller Thursday afternoon Sept 14th. Mrs. Joe MItchell, Miss Ida Mitchell adn MIss Eula Jackson served punch. Between the hours of three and five, scores of friends called bringing useful and lovely gifts for the kitchen of Mrs. Miller's new home now nearing completion. The Miller home, which burned in the early Spring, has been replaced by a seven-room brick veneer cottage, modern in every detail. ____ Glen Methodist Parsonage burned about noon Thursday, the blaze starting in the roof, supposedly igniting from sparks from the chimney. It is understood the property was at least partially covered by insurance. ___ Heard County Superior Court met in fall session Monday. As we go to press, the Teal - Mapp murder case is under trial with a horde of witnesses for examination. At conclusion of this case it is understood court will recess until Monday when the Moore case will go on trial. _____ TEXAS Community News Hugh and Mrs. Mickle and daughters of Franklin, visited Dr. and Mrs. Mickle Sunday. ___ John Davis and Mrs. Arrington, of Hogansville, visited Hoyt and Mrs. Arrington on Sunday. ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, September 29, 1939 Miss Mary Whitaker of Franklin plighted her troth to Melvyn Theodore Kelley of Atlanta at an impressive ceremony solemnized Thursday afternoon, September 21st at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Goss J. Whitaker in the presence of the immediate family and a few close friends. _______ COURT POUNDS AWAY AGAIN THIS WEEK We could not get criminal cases disposed of at press time last week, though court recessed about same time and has been in session three days this week, trying the Moore case in which certain land is claimed by Mrs. Wayne Wortham out of her mother's estate. This makes twice this expensive case has been before the court. Judge Wyatt being disqualified, it has been tried both times by Judge James C. Davis, former Heard Countian and now Judge at the Stone Mountain Circuit. The case was given to the jury about noon Wednesday after an exhaustive charge by Judge Davis, and about 5 o'clock the jury reported a deadlock of 3 to 9 with no chance of agreement when a mistrial was declared. The criminal cases disposed of are: Marshall Gosdin, drunkeness, $50. or 12 months. Alma and Sam Cavender, simple larceny, each $35. and 12 months, the latter suspended on good behavior and payment of fine. Bill Smith, drunk on highway, $35. or 6 months. Hulet Heard, possessing distilling apparatus, $50. or 12 months. P.A. Kish, carrying postol without license, $75. or 12 months. Clint Davis, using profane language in presence of female, 6 months in jail, suspended on good behavior. Floyd Rouser, Tom Marshall and Eddie B. Watkins, manufacturing whiskey, cerdict of guilty with recommendation of each $60. or 12 months, Watkins not tried. John Zachry, possessing liquor, $40. or 6 months. Ike Stegall, playing and betting, $20. or 3 months. C.J. Johnson and Willie Lawson, guilty of manufacturing liquor, each $65. or 12 months. George Ponder, possessing liquor, $35. or 6 months. Bartow Daniel, possessing liquor, $40. or 6 months. Clarence Henderson, burglary, verdict of guilty, 3 to 5 years. Ike Teal, murder, verdict of guilty of manslaughter, 5 to 7 years, motion for new trial. ________ 25 YOUNG MEN ARE WANTED FOR MARINE CORPS During September twenty-five men will ce accepted for enlistment in the United States Marine Corps from this area of which Macon, GA is headquarters. Applicants must be between the ages of 18 to 28, 64 to 74 inches tall, of good moral character and in excellent physical condition. At least one year of high school education or the equivalent is required. Full information concerning enlistment may be had from the headquarters in Macon. ____ 10 BOYS, 2 ALTERNATES LEAVE OCT 3 for CCC Ten boys and 2 alternates for CCC Camp Service will leave Oct 3rd for Villa Rica where they will be enrolled and assigned. The boys are Harold W. Brown, John T. Pike, Tommie E. Crenshaw, Darden Daniel, Shirl Tuggle, Wilton Worley, Thomas H. Florence, Glenn Gladney, Horace I. Bolt, Ray Shelnutt; alternates, Harold W. Strickland is able to be up again after an operation. ___ We are sorry to hear of the death of Mrs. Eva Thaxton of Columbus. ____ HOME NEWS, SUGGESTIONS, GOSSIP The Vaughan - Daniel quartet is to put on a concert at Carrollton auditorian Monday night, Oct 2nd. This quartet is said to be one of the best in the south. ____ Mr. Lane Bird, in pharmacy school in Atlanta, spent the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.S. Bird. ____ Mr. T.A. Lipham Jr., left Monday to resume his studies at Emory at Oxford. ___ Gay Stephens, from Honduras, is staying with her Aunt, Mrs. T.H. Lipford, and attending Franklin school. ____ Dr. Fred Simonton, Lafayette, visited Mr. and Mrs. Carl Simonton this weekend. ____ I will not be responsible for any debts other than those made by myself.
