Storey, of Temple Avenue and his son Dan Storey, were awarded gold medals by the Methodist Church in Newnan, in recognition of five years of attending Sunday School without missing a Sunday. ___ Carrollton list one of it most prominent and highly esteemed citizens Wednesday morning when death took away George W. Fleming, age 78, who died at Sweetwater, Tenn., early Wednesday while on a visit there. ____ Fire razed the T.W. Richards Planing Mill at Hulett Monday night and did damage estimated at $6,000. The fire was one of the most spectacular to occur in Carroll County in recent years and cerated a great deal of excitement in the Hulett section. ____ The stewards of the three Methodist Churches in Bowdon, in joint session, have voted unanimously to ask the bishop to permit the reorganization of the work into one church, instead of three at present. ____ American Legion Post 53 is planning to sponsor a Randolph County Fair in Roanoke again this fall but the fair will not be held before the latter part of October at a date to be announced later. The later date this year has been caused by the inability to get an earlier date with an acceptable amusement company. ____ The largest cattle farm in Heard or Carroll County is that of J.H. Barr of Bowdon. It is composed of 340 acres of rolling carpet grass lands located in the upper part of Heard County about six miles south of Tyus. Here graze 90 cattle including the whiteface Hereford, one of the finest beef cattle that can be bought. There are also gray Jerseys which are breeding to the white face type. All of Mr. Barr's cattle were brought from Texas and recently five pure bred ones from this state were added to the stock. ____ Hugh Glass and daughter Alla Fay of Newnan, spent Sunday night at Woodlawn. ____ GLENLOCH Community News The Sunday guests of Joe and Mrs. Gray were S.A. Gray of Columbus, Olen and Mrs. Farr of Rock Mills, Ala., Charlie and Mrs. Dowdy and Mrs. S.A. Prince of Welcome, Roy Bailey and family, Jeff Duke and family of Bethel. ___ Little Misses Dora and Doris Jackson attended the birthday party of Jane Ashley Saturday afternoon at Centralhatchee. ____ Ralph Shoemake spent the weekend with his parents, J.W. and Mrs. Shoemake. ___ Chambers Almon and mother, Mrs. Z.P. Almon, Mrs. L.A. Smith and Mrs. J.W. Shoemake made a business trip to Carrollton Thursday. ___ We are sorry to hear that Joe and Mrs. Gray and son Dumas will move to Franklin one day this week. ___ TEXAS Community News A nice crowd attended church at Prospect Sunday for quarterly meeting. ____ Miss Virginia Baird of Birmingham, Ala, spent the weekend with her parents, Mack and Mrs. Baird. ___ Jarrell and Mrs. Looser of LaFayette, Ala, Clifford and Mrs. Baker of Landage, Ala, spent last Sunday with Lewis and Mrs. Golden. ____ Mrs. C.M. Mickle spent a few days this week with her daughter, Mrs. Carey Brannon, in LaGrange. ___ Dewey Jones and daughter, Louise of Roanoke, Ala, visited here Sunday afternoon. ___ Lewis and Mrs. Golden visited relatives at Five Points and LaFayette, Ala, Monday. ___ A crowd of boys and girls from here enjoyed a possum hunt Saturday night. ___ Mrs. J.B. Mulkey of LaGrange spent last week with E.J. Mulkey family. __ Miss Thelma Drummond is spending this week with her sister, Mrs. Fred Gore, at Ridgeway. ___ RIDGEWAY Community News Clyde Talley of Lagrange spent the weekend with Lowell Lesley. ___ Howard Welburn spent last week in LaGrange. ___ W.O. and Mrs. Pearce and daughter Mavis visited relatives in Shawmut on Sunday last. ___ Miss Jewell Lesley spent the weekend with Miss Evelyn Sheets. __ Sorry to report Mrs. J.M. Hill and Joe Sheets on the sick list. ___ Melvin Johnson and family spent Sunday at Potash, Ala. __ There will be a Sheets reunion at the old Sheets homeplace on the third Sunday in October. Everybody has a special invitation to attend. Come and bring lunch. Rev. O.S. Sheets will preach in the afternoon. __ ROCKALO Community News Most all are getting through picking cotton early this time. ___ Chester and Mrs. Freeman of LaGrange visited relatives here the weekend. ___ Mrs. Emma Grizzard of near Bowdon, spent the weekend with her mother, Mrs. Mollie Hull. ___ Jesse and Mrs. Otwell recently visited relatives near Ranburn, Ala. ___ Tommie and Mrs. Hull are the proud parents of a little girl born Sept. 23rd. ___ Sam and Mrs. Cavender have moved to LaGrange. ___ Harvey and Mrs. Calhoun of LaGrange spent Sunday with Mrs. Mollie Hull. ___ The death angel visited the home of Lit Thaxton of Columbus Sept 23rd and took away his devoted wife. She leaves her husband and nine children, a number of friends and relatives. ___ News reached here Monday of the death of Mrs. S.C. Hull of McGregor, Texas. She was known as Grandmother Hull to all that knew here. She was the mother-in- law of Mollie Hull, was the mother of 17 children, 88 years of age and lived in this section for many years. ____ Grace and Mrs. Snyder spent the weekend with Mirl and Mrs. Butler near Ridgeway. ___ HOME NEWS, SUGGESTIONS, GOSSIP Mrs. J.T. Adams of Decatur, is spending a while with Rev. and Mrs. J.C. Adams. ___ Miss Joyce Mickle has returned to Milledgeville to resume her studied at GSCW. ___ Mr. and Mrs. Leon Tarpley of Villa Rica, Mr. and Mrs. Brown Lancaster of Atlanta, spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Lancaster. ___ All singers and listeners have a special invitation to the singing at Bethel church on the 2nd and 4th Sunday nights beginning at 7 o'clock. Bethel is near Waresville. ___ Workmen are putting the final touches on the interior of the Methodist Church. All members should attend services and see for themselves the improvements. It is probable some have forgotten how a church looks inside. ___ Engineers have been in Franklin this week making what it is understood, final surveys for the new Chattahochee Bridge and the paving west of the river to the Carroll line. Let up hope that the contract will be speedily let as recommended by the grand jury and as so long promised by the State. ___ Mr. J.D. Stephens is back at Pleasant Hill and is rapidly regaining is strength after an operation, much to the pleasure of his hosts of friends. ___ Mr. W.G. Gray and Miss Maggie Ruth Costley, both of Coweta County, appeared at the Ordinary's Office Saturday afternoon when Miss Sledge joined them in wedlock. ___ Dr. Whit T. Brock, Franklin's popular Dentist, and Miss Lillian Butler, prominent business woman of Carrollton, were joined in wedlock Saturday last by Judge H.H. Alsabrook. Until they can secure or build a home, the doctor will reside in Franklin and Mrs. Brock will reside in Carrollton, paying visits to each other by the bus schedules between the two cities. ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, October 13, 1939 Dr. Justin Andres, director of the State Health Department's malarial investigation division, estimated Tuesday that Malaria was costing Georgia $10,000,000 a year and that one sixth of all cases in the country occurred in this state. ____ Muscogee County Sheriff A.L. Poole said he had made cases against two men for plowing on Sunday. The sheriff listed Blanchard Anthony and Howard Spivey as having been charged with violating a state law prohibiting working on the Sabbath. Sheriff Poole said he had received complaints about Sunday plowing on Anthony's farm and when he investigated saw Spivey driving a tractor in a field. ___ Commissioner Almon has been hanging on the necks of the state highway board on the matter of paving Route One from Franklin to the Carroll line. Wendesday the commissioner had a telegram from Chairman Miller advising authority from bureau to advertise the paving project. It is understood that the work is to be let in three projects at the same time, completion of a short cut to the bridge, new bridge across the river and paving to the Carroll line. ___ Dr. J.W. Johnson, pastor of the First Methodist Church in Newnan, died Sunday of a heart attack just as he finished his mid day service. He was one of the leading preachers of the state. ___ GLENN Community News Glenn baseball team are very proud of their record the past season, being defeated only twice during the season. The following boys were members of the team: Dorsey Adamson, manager; Harold Gamble, captain; Ralph Williams, Robert Whitley, Thomas Whitley, Charles Will Adamson, Elton, Wilbur and Walter Wilson, Ernest Crockett and R.H. Whatley. ___ Lon Smith had a stroke while plowing Monday morning and is confined to his bed. ___ Whitley Barrett of Hogansville visited his mother Sunday and presented her with a radio. ___ Reuben Harold O'Neal is working in LaGrange on Saturdays. ___ Ralph and Mrs. Williams of LaGrange were visitors here Sunday. ___ Misses Mavis Ozley and Miryle Banks of Rock Mills Ala., were the weekend guests of Miss Ferrell Gamble. ___ Twenty-two members of the B.Y.P.U. enjoyed a possum hunt Friday. I Q and Mrs. Adams Jr. chaperoned the party. ___ Mrs. Burk Whitley's guest for the weekend was Mrs. Lena Birdsong of Atlanta who is back from an extended visit to Hawaii. ___ Several correspondents are complaining that certain of their items are omitted. Such is true. If we find an item has been reported by another correspondent, that is cut out. Then if letters come in late or find us crowded it becomes necessary to cut out certain items in order to get the matter into the paper at all. Since being burned out a few years ago we've never yet been able to afford another linetype and it is a big job to handle news by the slow process of setting type by hand. But if we could get all subscribers to pay up promptly and all the county families to take the paper and pay for it in advance we'd get a new linotype and then could set and carry everything before as we did before the burning of our office in 1929. ____ LEGAL NOTICE - - Sale of Land by Agreement of Heirs Georgia, Heard County Under and by virtue of an agreement between all of the heirs of R. PLEASANT Community News Bryon Kirk of Newnan, all smiles over a little girl about three weeks old, spent Saturday with his parents, W.H. and Mrs. Kirk. ___ I.E. Middlebrooks and son Idus, with Bradley Davis, made a business trip to Atlanta on Tuesday. __ We are glad to say Miss Pauline Combs, who has been in the Wesley Memorial Hospital for over three weeks is at home, to the delight of her many friends. ___ Bob Parker of Newnan, spent last Thursday afternoon with his father, Uncle Bonnie Parker. __ The many friends of Dorothy Arnett will be glad to know she is doing fine. She has been in Warm Springs Hospital for the past two months. ___ Mrs. John Arrington of Hogansville, is spending a few days with her parents Homer and Mrs. Kitchens. ___ Hubert Harris who has been in the CCC in Oregon for some time, is at home to stay. ___ Luther Walston and family are leaving Tuesday for the State of Texas. We hate to lose these good neighbors. ___ SIMPSON Community News The people in this section will soon be through gathering as the boll weevil has gathered most of the cotton before it opened. ___ The birthday dinner given at the home of Mrs. Tom Folds on Sunday in her honor, was much enjoyed. ___ We are sorry to report Mrs. R.N. Levens in a serious condition. ___ Miss Jimmie Nell Hardy is in Newnan to have her eyes treated. ___ HIGHWAY DEATH CONVICT FREED Earl Cammon, Carroll countian convicted of involuntary manslaughter for the highway death of Darden McWhorter and sentenced to one to two years, was last week granted a conditional pardon by Governor E.D. Rivers. Cammon has been free under bond since conviction while his case was appealed to the state court of appeals. McWhorter was killed by an automobile while he was repairing his own vehicle on Carroll county roadside Christmas night 1937. Cammon left the scene without offer of help and it was some time before he ws sufficiently apprehended to be brought to trial. Darden McWhorter was a popular young man and numbers of Heard Countians opposed clemency for Cammon after such a light sentence resulted from his trial. ___ CENTRALHATCHEE HIGH SCHOOL NEWS Kathryn Terrell represented the county Friday of last week in the state spelling contest held at the Southeastern Fair. She won 7th place with a prize of $10. in cash. ___ HOME NEWS, SUGGESTIONS, GOSSIP Mrs. Howard Lane is spending this week in LaGrange. __ Miss Florence Lutz of Atlanta, spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Daniel. __ Mrs. T.W. Goodson spent Saturday with Mrs. James Farr at Rock Mills, Ala. ___ Dr. and Mrs. Roy Denney of Milledgeville spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Denney and will next week settle in Alma in southeast Georgia to practice medicine. His hosts of friends are sure he will at once be prominent and successful in his new field for which he is well equipped in both education and experience in addition to being a most thoroughly splendid young man. ___ The friends and relatives regret to learn that Mr. Ed Pentecost is seriously ill at his home in Roopville. Mr. Pentecost has been confined to his bed since the last of July. ___ Mr. Vance Brown of Heflin, Ala., spent the weekend with Dr. and Mrs. L.C. Ridley. Mrs. Ridley returned with her brother for a short visit. ___ Mr. Render Heard, University of Georgia student, accompanied by his sister Miss Willie Heard, of Atlanta, spent weekend with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. S.R. Heard. ___ LEGAL NOTICE - - Georgia, Heard County Whereas, Miss Maggie Drummond, administrator of Mrs. G.W. Drummond's estate, represents to the court in her petition duly filed and entered on records, tha she has duly administered Mrs. G.W. Drummond's estate. O'Neal has moved to Roanoke and will operate a boarding house. We regret to lose these good people from our community. ___ Dorsey Adamson leaves this week for Atlanta where he has a position. ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, October 20, 1939 Mrs. A.J. Lane is visiting her parents in Austell for a few days. __ Mrs. H.E. Burdett spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Burdett in Thomasville. _____ Mr. and Mrs. Frank H. Stephens arrived Sunday from Honduras, Central America, to spend a while among relatives and friends, stopping with Mr. and Mrs. T.H. Lipford. They drove through in their car, good roads now making the journey possible by land. ____ Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Whitaker and Anne spent Sunday with relatives in Moreland. __ Mr. and Mrs. Leon Tarpley of Villa Rica, spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs.Henry Lancaster. __ Mr. John Oswald visited his mother, Mrs. Cynthia Oswald, in Greensville, the weekend. ___ Mr. and Mrs. G.H. Turner and son Harris, of Daytona Beach, Fla., Mr. Leon J. Cox and son Leon Jr., of Savannah, were recent visitors of Mrs. Lena H. Cox at her country cottage, U-Ma-Rest. Mrs. Cox will leave shortly for Daytona Beach where she has a lovely cottage, to spend the winter months. ___ Dr. T.W. Brock, realizing poor crops and so many needing dental work, advises that he will be glad to exchange work for beef cattle, hogs, and other farm products he can use. ___ Mr. and Mrs. P.T. McCutchen Jr. and children, Dallas, Miss Virginia McCutchen, Atlanta, Mr. and Mrs. C.C. McCutchen, Haleyville, Ala., and Miss Helen Sanders, Miani, Fla., were guest of Mrs. and Mrs. P.T. McCutchen this weekend. ___ Miss Imogene Hopson spent the weekend in Newnan with her sister, Miss Ruby Hopson. ___ Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hopson who have been farming this year at Elery, have made spendidly full crops. They have just gathered a wonderful supply of sweet potatoes, two of which sent us this week weighed more than ten pounds, both smooth and perfect. ____ Our boyhood friend, Dan S. Haynes, former Heard countian, but residing a number of years near Meridian, Miss., was in town this week greeting his many friends. __ Editor and Mrs. P.T. McCutchen leave tomorrow for Charleston, S.C. where Mr. McCutchen is one of the Georgia representatives at the general Grand Bodies of the U.S. Royal Arch Masons and Royal Select Masters and the National Secretary's and Correspondent's Guild.
