GA Miscellaneous Newspaper Notices from 'The News and Banner", Franklin, Heard County, Georgia NOVEMBER 1939 Newspaper Issue of Friday, November 3, 1939 ELERY Community News We are sorry to hear of Mrs. Bessie Shelnutt being sick. __ Miss Clowey Buchanan is at home from Atlanta. ___ Elma Thrower is at home from the Army spending a few weeks. __ GLENN Community News Misses Alene and Helen Wilson of Bessie Tift College were weekend visitors at home. ___ Misses Margaret Williams and Jane Golden of West Georgia College, visited their parents Sunday. __ Miss Ozella Adams of Columbus, was called home Saturday night by the serious illness of her grandfather, Lon Smith, who suffered a second stroke on Friday. ___ James Crockett has accepted a position in LaGrange. He will move his family there soon. __ Young Lester of Atlanta, visited his Aunt, Mrs. Clara Jackson, the weekend. __ HOME NEWS, SUGGESTIONS, GOSSIP Mr. Dent Goodson, Tamp, Fla., spent several days the past week with his mother, Mrs. Eva Goodson, and greeting his many friends. ___ Dr. J.L. Taylor is building a hothouse on his lot adjoining The News and Banner office, for winter preservation of Mrs. Taylor's lovely flowers. We'll be close enough to imagine ourself in Florida while gazing at the lovely blooms beside our printshop during the frozen days to come. ____ Announcement has been made of the engagement of Miss Elizabeth Smith and Mr. Wiley P. McGinty of Atlanta. Miss Smith is the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Willis Smith, formerly of Franklin, and Mr. McGinty is a popular teacher at Tech. High School in Atlanta. ___ Mrs. Mary Ellis, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Beadle of Atlanta, were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Q.C. Daniel. ___ Mrs. R.E.L. Jones of Whitesburg, returned home Wednesday, after a visit to Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Ridley. ___ Miss Eloise Gill, Woolsey, spent the weekend with Mrs. Stanton Adams. ___ Mrs. R.E. Currin Jr., of Broxton, was the guest of Mrs. Carl Simonton the past weekend. ___ Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Burdett of Atlanta, spent Sunday with Mrs. H.E. Burdett. __ Taylor Lee was painfully hurt a few days ago when struck by a truck on church hill, throwing him from his bicycle. ___ Mr. Dan Taylor, of Fort McPherson, spent Sunday with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.L. Taylor. ___ Willie Clark, colored helper at the Chattahoochee Service Station, was seriously bruised and lacerated Saturday when the truck he was driving collided with another near Cooksville and turned over. Clark was pinned beneath the machine but was extricated still conscious and was rushed to a hospital where he is recovering under treatment of Dr. G.W Hammond in Newnan, who had to take more than 150 stitches on Clark's head and body. ___ Mr. Lane Bird of Atlanta, spent Sunday with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.S Bird. __ Miss Mallie Johnson of Macon, spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. H.J. Noles. ___ SMITH -- MCKOY A marriage of much interest to their many friends was that of Miss Cathrine Smith, daughter of Mrs. Radah Byrd Smith and late Marvin Smith, of Hollingsworth Ferry, to Mr. Herbert McKoy of Mt Carmel in Coweta County. The couple accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. McKoy, motored to Newnan last Saturday night where the ceremony was performed by Rev. C.C Thomas. They will reside with the bride's mother, Mrs. Smith, at Hollingsworth for the present. ____ LIBERTY Community News Mrs. J.M. Brown has been sick for the past week. __ J.R. and Mrs. Caswell had as their weekend guests Bob and Mrs. Brown, Paul and Mrs. Mashburn, of Dadeville, Ala. ___ Radney and Mrs. Cooley of LaGrange, spent Saturday night with Leonard and Mrs. McClain. ___ Eddie and Mrs. Lester of LaGrange, spent the weekend with M.E. and Mrs. Lester. __ SIMPSON Community News E.T. Wright visited relatives on Sand Mountain the weekend. __ Lee and Mrs. Yearwood of near Carrollton are visiting their parents, N.L. and Mrs. Folds. ___ Rev. Fred Gore will preach at New Springs Saturday night. __ Miss Effie Bea Folds spent the weekend with Miss Limer Folds at Glenloch. ___ J.B. Wright and wife, Haywood Wright, Columbus, Artist Wright and family, LaGrange, visited relatives here over the weekend. ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, November 10, 1939 TWO HEARD COUNTY RESIDENCES BURNED The home of Mr. and Mrs. Grady Almon, near Welcome, was destroyed by fire early Thursday morning of last week. Nothing was saved, and the family barely escaped about three o'clock a.m. in their night clothes as the roof began falling in. There was small insurance coverage. The same day, the home of Mrs. L.H. Hannah near Glenloch was also burned, supposedly caught from a defective flue and the whole house was ablaze when discovered, making salvage of the contents impossible. Mrs. Hannah is said to have had a small amount of insurance also. ____ MRS. M.L. KITCHENS DIES AT RIPE AGE OF 90 YEARS Mrs. M.J.Kitchens, 90, beloved widow of the late A.J. Kitchens, died, after a lingering feebleness, late Tuesday afternoon, with interment Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock at Prospect, near her life-long residence. Mrs. Kitchens would have reached her 90th birday Dec 15th. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. C.M. Mickle, Texas, and Mrs. L.R. Jones, Roanoke, Ala; one sister, Mrs. M.E. Arrington, Franklin. Surviving also aer 15 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren, with hosts of other relatives and loving friends. Her husband, prominent for many years in Heard County affairs, preceded her 14 years ago. ___ SUNDAY AFTERNOON FIRE DOES DAMAGE NEAR LIBERTY Sunday was the birthday of Mr. J.O. Boggus, near Liberty in the southern section of the county and members of the family and friends assembled at his home for dinner. About 1:30 a pile of cordwood and kindling in a shed near the residence was discovered afire. Before the fire could be arrested the shed, the wood, shop and tools and a smokehouse had been destroyed but by heroic efforts the residence was saved and burning grass toward the beehives was also finally conquered. A bale of seed cotton that had been made on the place was also consumed. It is understood that Mr. Boggus had no insurance. ____ SIMPSON Community News Hogs in the community are being killed. __ Those visiting N.L. Folds and family on Sunday were: R.N. Daniels and family of near Tyus; Henry and Mrs. Folds and daughter Limer and Miss Madeline Prescott of near Goshen; J.B. and Mrs. Wright of Columbus; Miss Vera Hyatt, John and Mae Folds, of Atlanta; Kay Folds of Carrollton. ___ Travis Bailey and family visited relatives in Alabama Saturday night. __ Homer Wright and family, Harvey Wright and family of Columbus, visited home folks over the weekend. ___ HARVEST FESTIVAL AT WESLEY CHAPEL We will have Harvest Festival at Wesley Chapel on Saturday night Nov 18th. Will have some good music, plenty of cakes, candy and other good things to eat. All are invited to attend. __ GLENN Community News Ridley and Mrs. McClain of Akron, Ohio are visiting their parents for the weekend. ___ Mrs. Paul Laws is quite sick at this writing. __ Miss Louise McClain was married to John Lesho in Akron in October. They are visiting the former's parents, J.T. and Mrs. McClain. ___ HOME NEWS, GOSSIP Durelle Hill, who recently underwent an operation for tonsilitis and adenoids at an Atlanta hospital, is at home resting up and rapidly improving. __ For Sale - - Texas Red Rust Proof Oats for sale at 65 cents per bushel. Grady H. Ridley, Franklin, GA. ___ Mr. J. G. Bruce and son John G. Jr., of Bessemer, Ala., were in the city Saturday, coming over to look after the old family farm near Cooksville now owned by Mr. Bruce. We are always delighted to see him. ___ The weather is again getting variable with wintry blasts demanding fires in the heaters. About 25 loads of firewood were announced ready to haul in and to be delivered before the end of October. Wintry weather is here but the wood is not. What about it fellers ? _____ Mr. A.L. Hardy, Hamilton attorney, spent awhile Tuesday when passing on a business trip, with his sister, Mrs. P.T. McCutchen. __ Her hosts of friends will be delighted to learn that Mrs. R.P. Davis of Campground, who has been quite ill at a hospital in LaGrange, is improving and apparently safely on the road to recovery. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, November 17, 1939 COOLEY's STORE Community News Cramon Arnett of Shawmut, Ala., spent the weekend with homefolks. __ Mrs. W.H. Kirk and Mrs. Elmer Kirk, spent Sunday afternoon with Mrs. A.J. Tollison. ___ Wilson and Mrs. Smith, with the latter's parents, G.P. and Mrs. Wingo, of Hogansville, were the Sunday afternoon guests of C.A. and Mrs. Caswell. B.A. Layton and family of Columbia, S.C., spent the weekend with homefolks. ___ W.J. Arnett has had electric lights put in his residence. __ CARD OF THANKS Our sincere thanks go out to the many who were so kind to us and our dear mother and grandmother, Mrs. M.J. O'Neal, left Friday for Massachusetts to make their future home with former's parents. ___ Edward McClain and Miss Ethel Cook were happily married Wednesday night. ___ J.H. O'Neal spent the weekend in Roanoke, Ala., with his wife and daughter who are running a boarding house there. ___ R.W. and Mrs. O'Neal spent the weekend with Mrs. E.T. McClain. _______ H.D. DANIEL IS DEAD AFTER LONG ILLNESS After an illness of many weeks, Mr. H.D. Daniel, 59, died at his home at Tompkins Mill late Monday afternoon. Funeral services were conducted yesterday at 11 o'clock from the Franklin Methodist Church of which he was a member, Rev. J.C. Adams officiating and Lewis & Lipford as directors, with interment at the old Miller burial place. Surviving are his wife, two sons and one daughter, Lane Daniel, Franklin; Herschel Daniel, Cadiz, Ohio; Mrs. Harvey Nelms, LaGrange; three brothers, G.E. Daniel, Franklin; R.A. and Frank Daniel, who reside in Oklahoma. ____ CENTRALHATCHEE HIGH SCHOOL NEWS Lonnie Rogers of the class of '32 and Miss Vivian Denney of near Carrollton, were joined in wedlock Saturday afternoon Nov 9. Miss Ruth Almon of the class of '39 and Thomas Fredell of Roopville have also married recently. ______ Mr. and Mrs. G.E. Daniel have received notice of the serious illness of Mr. and Mrs. H.I. Daniel's daughter, Dora in Ohio. ____ Four thousand people in rural Georgia residing in the drouth and flooded areas are to get government employment shortly. Applications should be made right away. ___ HOME NEWS, SUGGESTIONS, GOSSIP Mrs. C.P. Ware, Mrs. Cora Miller of Newnan, spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Miller. Mr. John Miller has accepted a place with a large feed house in Carrollton, and was at home Sunday with his parents. __ Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Denney and Miss Lois Denney spent last weekend with Dr. and Roy Denney in Alma, reporting an enjoyable trip through the southeast Georgia section. ___ Mr. Oscar Heilman and son John, of Birmingham, Ala., spent several days the past week with her cousin, Mrs. A.J. Lane. ____ Fiddler's Convention at Waresville school house Saturday night, Nov 18. Admission 10 cents. Music you'll enjoy. __ Dr. and Mrs. C.W. Brock have moved to Franklin and reside with Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Awbrey. __ Mr. S. Smith, Chattanooga, Tenn., was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Daniel last week. __ Mr. and Mrs. C.R. Wilson are arranging to move back to the old home place a mile west of town within a few days.
