GA Miscellaneous Newspaper Notices from "The News and Banner", Franklin, Heard County, Georgia DECEMBER 1939 NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, December 1, 1939 MRS. S.F. ARRINGTON PASSES AT RIPE AGE Mrs. S.F. Arrington, 78, and life long resident of Heard County, died at her home on Newnan street Monday and was buried from the Methodist Church Tuesday at 1 a.m., Rev. J.C. Adams officiating, with Lewis & Lipford as directors. Interment was at Prospect, near her former home. Mrs. Arrington had been active up to Thanksgiving day when she was seized with a severe headache, later in the day a stroke of paralysis, and never regained consciousness. She was known and highly esteemed by a large circle of friends. Surviving are a daughter and two sons: Mrs. Essie Formby, J.J. Arrington, Franklin; O.C. Arrington, Akron, Ohio; several grandchildren, nephews and nieces and other relatives. ____ CARD OF THANKS Words fail to express our appreciation and thanks to the many Franklin neighbors and friends throughout the county for their many kindnesses and comforting words and favors in the recent illness and death of dear mother and grandmother, Mrs. S.F. Arrington. J.J. Arrington and Family Mrs. Essie Formby and Family ______ RIDGEWAY Community News Dewey and Mrs. Fincher of Wehadkee, Ala, spent Sunday with Ben and Mrs. Johnson. __ J.R. Noles and family of Elery, visited J.C. and Mrs. Janney Sunday. ____ Miss Jewel Lesley is at home after spending three weeks in LaGrange. ____ It was a shock to this community Sunday to hear of the death of Mrs. R.B. Smith of LaGrange. She was brought to Ridgeway and laid to rest. Rev. Eliot and Rev. Claude Dunlap conducted the funeral services. She leaves five sons and two daughters, Arthur, Springer, Ernest, Jim and T. Smith; Mrs. L. J. Vaughan and Mrs. Everett Moody. She was a lovable and devoted wife and mother and the entire family have our deepest sympathy. ___ Lee and Mrs. Hill and Reader Davis of Mt. Pleasant spent Sunday with Mrs. A.J. Gore. ___ GLENN Community News Rev. and Mrs. Bob Stewart returned from Atlanta Saturday where they attended the annual conference. Mrs. Stewart has been confined to her bed since their return. ___ Mrs. Dorsey Adamson has been sick at her mother's, Mrs. I.Q. Adams, this past week. ___ Henry and Mrs. Williams announce the birth of a son on Nov 21st. ___ Lynn Gamble of Charleston, S.C., spent the weekend with his parents, Jim and Mrs. Gamble. ___ Mrs. Edward Stone and daughter Emily, Martha and Wilbur Wilson of Atlanta, spent the holidays with their father Ed Wilson. ___ YELLOW DIRT Community News We have some real christian people in this vicinity. They go to church if they do have to wade the creek to get there. Last Sunday was regular preaching at Yellow Dirt Church; had a good attendance considering the circumstances. The bridge washed out on Aug 24 and to our sorrow has never been replaced. ____ News and Views of F.H.S. Mr. Staples gave the Perry boys a Thanksgiving dinner at the cafe Thursday. The ball teams gave the boys a reception after the ball game Wednesday night. Charley Bonner of the sixth grade is real sick with double pneumonia. We hope he will soon be back in school. ___ Two more miles of post roads Loftin toward Simpson are now being built after a delay of quite a while during the debacle of state funds. Another two miles between Glenloch and the highway at Burson's store is being put on after another conference Commissioner Almon had this week with the state highway board. This will include a new and much needed bridge and a fill to compensate the heavy grade on this particular piece of road. The paving on Highway One to the Carroll line seems still up in the air but it is confidently believed that it will shortly be advertised as requested of the governor by the State Highway Board and the U.S. Bureau of Roads. ____ HOME NEWS, SUGGESTIONS, GOSSIP Mrs. J.L. Daniel visited relatives in Atlanta last week. __ Mrs. Stanton Adams and Jere visited relatives in Roanoke, Ala the past week. ___ Mrs. Melvin Kelley of Atlanta, spent Monday with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. G.J. Whitaker. ___ Mr. W.A. (Lon) Harris, 94, former Heard countian, and one of Troup County's oldest citizens, died last week. He had hosts of friends in Heard County. ___ Miss Odell Formby went to Atlanta to spend the holidays but was called back by the serious illness of her grandmother, and was accompanied back by her sister, Mrs. Vera Conrad, also Mr. Bradley Arrington. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, December 8, 1939 MISS ELIZABETH KIRK PASSES TO REWARD Miss Elizabeth Kirk, 85, died at her home near Mt. Pleasant, Monday. She was lovingly known by hosts of friends as Aunt Missie. The interment was at Mt. Pleasant Tuesday, conducted by Rev. Lovic Hunter and attended by many loving relatives and mourning friends. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. J.O. Lee and Miss Sarah Kirk; two brothers, J.N and W.H. Kirk all of Heard County. ____ I.M. WILLIAMSON SUCCUMBS TO ILLNESS Though in feeble health for a long while, Mr. I.M. Williamson, 65, after a short period of illness, died at his home at Centralhatchee, Friday. He was reared in Heard County and had many friends. Surviving are Mrs. Williamson, four sons, Marion, Charlies, Elbert and Luther Williamson; four daughters, Mrs. Herman Bishop, Atlanta; Mrs. Tom Gladney, Mrs. Joe McWhorter, Centralhatchee; Mrs. Millians, Newnan; two brothers, William and Henry Williamson. ____ STATELINE Community News Carey Yarbrough, of LaGrange, spent the week with his parents, Dara and Mrs. Yarbrough. ___ R.W. and Mrs. O'Neal spent Sunday with Ray and Mrs. Brumbelo of Roanoke, Ala. __ CENTRALHATCHEE HIGH SCHOOL (ALUMNI) NEWS Miss Leola Dorough and J.D. Marchman were married last week. Leola is a graduate of Centralhatchee class of '34 and J.D. finished in '36. Alton McWhorter, Centralhatchee class of '34, was recently married to Miss Opal Cowart. They are both teachers at Lowell in Carroll County. Alton Foster, Centralhatchee graduate of '30, now has a job on the cotton program in Franklin. Alton is a former teacher at Centralhatchee. ___ HOME NEWS, SUGGESTIONS, GOSSIP Her many friends will be delighted to learn that Mrs. Hugh Striplin who has been in the hospital for several weeks, is now at her home in the northern section of the county much improved. __ Mr. J.W. Ray and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Whatley of LaGrange, spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Arrington. ___ Mr. Frank Tompkins, of Cadiz, Ohio, spent the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Tompkins. ___ Mr. H.E. Burdett came home this week from hospital where he has spent several weeks with little improvement, much to the regret of his many friends. __ Mr. F.H. Stephens and family this week returned to Honduras, Central America, after a visit of several weeks among relatives. __ Free Guineas and Turkeys Saturday morning Dec 9th at 10 o'clock, a turkey and guinea trot. WIll turn loose ten in front of our store free to any who catch them. Boone's, Newnan, Georgia ___ Dr. Ross Mooty, of Winter Haven, Fla., and his sister Mrs. Lena McDonald, spent awhile as they passed through their old home city of Franklin a few days ago, with their cousin, Mrs. J.S. Tompkins. ____ New Gristmill Going Again - - I am again grinding corn and making the best grade of meal at Franklin. Our outfit was recently destroyed by fire but if possible, we now have a still better one and will grind every week day. Bring us your corn. Henry Bowen ____ Mr. M.O.Lester, near Liberty, killed a peculiar snake some days ago. it was a fighter and possessed a stinger as well protruding from the end of it's tail which appeared deadly to anything it touched. The snake stung itself to death after it's head had been mashed. ____ The Franklin Baptist Church recently sent a box to the Hapeville orphanage. Among the contents were $5.00 in cash and $8.00 worth of produce. ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, December 15, 1939 WILD DEER SEEN NEAR LOFTIN IN HEARD COUNTY Three wild deer are constant visitors on the farm of J.W. Smith 2 miles south of Loftin in northwest Heard. Friday at noon they fed up to the corn crib a few feet of the family sitting on the porch and have been seen at night several times before, Mr. Smith advises. ___ POPE'S BIG STORE BURNED TO GROUND FRIDAY MORNING Hosts of friends throughout the county learned Friday of the destruction by fire of undetermined origin early that morning of Mr. Howard Pope's big mercantile establishment near Loftin at the base of Blackjack Mountain. Both popular and progressive Mr. Pope had built up a large and lucrative business and had a splendid stock valued at from $8,000 to $10,000. On account of such high insurance premium rates, we are advised, there was only about $1500. on the store and stock, not more than sufficient to replace the building. ___ WARESVILLE Community News J.H. Kitchens is able to be out again after being crippled for a month. ___ Mr. Elton Moore is quite feeble. __ Wheeler and Mrs. Gilipin have moved to the Wilkerson place; Lon and Mrs. Crouch have moved to the G.W. Stephens place. ___ Mrs. Ida Arnett has a new radio. ___ Mrs. E.S. Dennis has been spending several days with her children in Atlanta. __ We are very sorry to learn that Mrs. C.M.Mickle will be carried to the hospital this week. ___ HOME NEWS, SUGGESTIONS, GOSSIP Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Lane Jr. and children, Carrollton, visited Mrs. Eva Goodson the past week. __ Mr. and Mrs. T.M. Mitchel and daughter Mamie, of Summersville, visited S.A. Cagle, Mrs. Oswald remaining for the week. __ Mr. A.L.Hardy, Arthur III and Keigh McLaughlin, Hamilton, were Franklin visitors Sunday. __ The Franklin friends of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Langley, LaGrange, deeply sympathize with Mrs. Langley in the death of her husband, which occurred Sunday after an auto accident. ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of December 22, 1939 SIMPSON Community News Mrs. Claude Chrochan is visiting her mother, Mrs. Wilson Hardy. ___ Mrs. Carrie Powers and children and Miss Vara Hyatt have returned from a visit to Austell. ___ W.D. RIDLEY, PROMINENT PLANTER, DIES SUDDENLY WEDNESDAY MORNING Mr. W.D. Ridley, 80, prominent citizen and planter, died suddenly at his home 8 miles west of town about 9 a.m. Wednesday morning. Mr. Ridley had suffered a bad heart for several years, but most of the time was active and for many years had been a successful farmer. He had arisen early Wednesday, ate breakfast, shaved himself and had walked out about his barn feeling better than usual. On his return to the house by way of his garden, in which he always took great pride, he fell dead beside the pathway. Mr. Ridley's home has ever been known as one of hospitality. He was never happier than when entertaining his friends, of whom he had many. He was interested and active all his life in the progress of his community and county. The funeral was held at Quattlebaum's Funeral Home, Roanoke, Ala., Thursday at 2 p.m. when he was buried beside his first wife and daughter. Surviving are his widow and one son, Ales Ridley. Nephews and nieces are: Mrs. R.E.L. Jones, Whitesburg; Ales Ridley Atlanta; L.C. and Grady H. Ridley, Franklin; Ridley Lovvorn, Bremen; Handley Lovvorn, Newell, Ala.; Mrs. Parkin Austin, Montgomery, Ala; Mrs. M.T. Shuttleworth, Nashville, Tenn; Mrs. Agnes Defoor, Ridley Almon, Atlanta; Gus Hunter, San Angelo, Tex; Mrs. Frances Boyd, Chattanooga, Tenn. ____ THOMPSON - CADENHEAD At the First Baptist church, LaGrange, Sunday afternoon ag 2 o'clock Miss Grace Thompson and Mr. Wm. W. Cadenhead were joined in wedlock in an impressive ceremony by Dr. Willis Howard, pastor. The bride is the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Heard H.Thompson, is a graduate of Heard County High School and of West Georgia College, and for quite a while has been assistant in the county welfare office and shares the esteem of hosts of friends. Mr. Cadenhead is a popular young LaGrange businessman. ____ BRUSHY CREEK Community News On November 19th Hulet Mooney and Irene Kirk were happily married. We wish for thema long and happy life. ___ HOME NEWS, SUGGESTIONS, GOSSIP Mr. C.J.Lancaster of Fairburn, is visiting his brother Mr. W.H. Lancaster. ____ Mr. P.N. McWaters had a partial stroke early in the week, but is now much improved. ___ Mrs. A.C. Mickle left this week for Orlando, Fla., where she will spend the winter months with her children. ___ Mrs. R.W. Bonner of Roanoke, Ala., announces the engagement of her daughter Ruby, to Cephas Adams of Glenn, GA, the wedding to be Dec 23. ___ Mrs. Esra Heard, little Jackie and Miss Grace Daniel are spending a few days among relatives in Atlanta. They will be accompanied on their return by Miss Nina Daniel and Miss Katrine Butler who will spend the holidays. ___ Mr. and Mrs. G.J. Whitaker, Miss Ann Whitaker are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Cauthen in Leesburg, Fla. ____ Mr. and Mrs. Thomas A. Lipham of Simpson, had as their guests for the weekend, Mrs. Alise B. Ivey, Misses Genevieve Burt, Vera Courson, Dorothy Lipham and Mr. James W. Callaway Jr., all of Columbus and Mr. Edwin Killalea of New York City. ___ Mrs. J.H. Kent, Miss Mary Jean Owensby, Mr. and Mrs. C.R. Bird and Mr. Pierce Thompson attended the Thompson- Cadenhead wedding in LaGrange. ___ Mrs. H.J. Noles and little granddaughter Ann Johnson are in Norfolk, VA visting Mr. and Mrs. Watson Noles. ___ Mr. and Mrs. V.O.
